Before we had GPs, we had fish and now I have an assortment of tanks that are just taking up space. This summer we may get more Bettas, but it will only be one or two and I have plenty of 2+ gallon tanks for them. What other pets can be housed comfortably in a 5, 10 or 30 gallon tank? I have 3 young children and 3 pigs so I’d prefer not to have something that needs a lot of daily interaction with humans. It would also be a bonus if it had some of the same bedding (I use fleece, pellets, shredded cardboard) and food requirements as the GPs. In addition to the tanks, I have a few leftover accessories for the Syrian hamster we used to have and that would be an easy choice for the 30 gallon tank (or a pair of dwarfs) but I’m wondering if there is something else I should consider. |

My only other suggestion for the 30 gallon is maybe a gecko of or some other easy to care for kid friendly lizard. I have no idea other than fish that can be kept in 5-10 gallon tanks. I wouldn't keep even a fish in a 5 gallon tank but that is just me. Maybe in the 10 gallon you could get a pair of hermit crabs? I dunno they are inexpensive to care for, don't require much human interaction, and kids typically love them. |

The 5 gallon tanks were for my Bettas, which I used to have a lot of. Hermit crabs sound like a good idea and I’ll research their care. Thanks. |

Geckos, as with all reptiles and amphibians, are wild animals. They should not be pets. If you find one in a rescue and can give it a great home that's fine but PLEASE do not purchase any exotic/wild animals from petstores or breeders and help them continue to exploit wild creatures and add to their suffering. |

Yes def. try to adopt an animal first and foremost. I have only every purchased maybe a handful of animals from a pet store in my lifetime. I always try to adopt or rescue if at all possible. |
