Question Hedgehog C&C question

I have a hedgehog named Lily and I have her in a sterilite cage at the moment, but I'm moving out of a tiny apartment into a bigger house and found this website! I want to build her a much bigger C&C cage, but I've built a a cage with mesh before and she's a climber, and therefore tried to climb the mesh and I didn't allow her to stay in there long for fear of her hurting herself. Not to mention, she kept running into the mesh, like she couldn't see it. She has no problem with the more solid sterilite walls even though she still tries to climb them.

So I love the idea of the C&C cages but I'm not sure what to do about her climbing the mesh, I hate her having to look at opaque walls all the time. What should I do as an alternative?

Re: Hedgehog C&C question

Personally I think a good cage for hedgehogs is plastic storage bins, at least 2 ft long and 2 feet wide.

Re: Hedgehog C&C question

You could connect some more bins together using pipes. Just make sure they have enough holes so that it's well ventilated.

Another option with solid walls and that would be very large is a custom Plexiglas cage. Again, it would need plenty of ventilation added.

Did your hedgehog fall down when it climbed the wire?

Re: Hedgehog C&C question

Usually she does fall down, yes. She climbs everything.

I thought about attaching bins with pipes but I'm not sure I have room for something like that, I'm moving back in with my family of 5 and there generally isn't floor space to be had.

Would PVC pipe be okay for connecting tunnels then? Does anyone know of any cages that have already been done like this? I wouldn't mind seeing how they set everything up. I don't know how she would like a 2-level, but those are really cool.

Re: Hedgehog C&C question

Here are instructions for a two level bin cage that would be easy to imitate or modify, or expand. The tube coming out the side is closed off for this particular cage, but could be connected to another bin or a play area. It uses PVC pipe. This two-bin cage uses ferret tubes.
