Hamsters

My brother is looking into adopting two dwarf hamsters from a local rescue. I have a pet store cage that my pigs live in...although I'm planning to upgrade as soon as possible. I was wondering, could that cage be big enough for them? Here is the URL:http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2753342. I would lower the shelf and modify the ramp so they could get to it, or just take it out all together. But what could I use to cover the bars of the cage so that they couldn't escape? Would chicken wire work, as long as it's on the outside of the cage? Thank you so much for any replies!

Re: Hamsters

I guess you could use chicken wire! I would suggest a bin cage. DO a search on them at google. You'll see a few results.

Re: Hamsters

I suggest using Hardware Cloth instead of Chicken wire. A more suitable enclosure would be a bin cage. They are fairly easy to make and you save a lot of money. Google 'Hamster Bin Cage'. You'll find many websites with detailed instructions.

Re: Hamsters

Hi, I recently rescued a syriam hamster. I constructed a bin cage. This little guy is such an escape artist. The bin cage is so-far-so-good. The whole top is constructed out of hardware cloth. It's holding well, it is a better choice than chicken wire. Chicken wire holes are too big, they make for an easy escape, especially with the compact size of dwarf hamsters. Hardware cloth is better. I bought it in a roll, the holes are smaller. PolkaDotPig gave some good advice.

Re: Hamsters

Hiya dra&pigs, I have a syrian hamster but the cage has very large bar spacing for dwarf hamsters. The cage is actually quite big though. I used a clear storage box and put bars on the front of it, it looks pretty good I suppose. I will add a picture later on, I have to go to bed .
