Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I know it sounds ridiculous, but would a hamster be able to be housed in a C&C cage with chicken wire on the inside of the grids? Would they chew on the coroplast? Are hamsters climbers? I was thinking a 1x2 or maybe even a 2x2 with a bunch of levels and stuff would be awesome for a hammy palace, but didn't know if chicken wire on the inside would work. |

I wouldn't recommend it. Chicken wires can be sharp and harmful for small animals if they try to bite it or get through it. If you really want to save money on a cage, I'd probably recommend big storage tubs. They're easier to clean. Here's an example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rach_thegoat/393435795/ They also call it hamster bins eHow: http://www.ehow.com/how_2101498_hamster-cage.html If you're just looking for a bigger cage, you can try those rabbit cages with smaller spacing. |

Here's another tutorial http://www.petwebsite.com/article_re...%20Type%20Cage Notice how in both cases, the wire mesh is somewhere the hammys can't get to easily. |

The bin idea is pretty cool. I spent $25 on a tiny cage for my hamster that was pretty much encased in plastic except for the door on the roof. I had to buy it because he literally chewed his top teeth down to almost nothing on the bars of his previous cage. I wish I had seen this earlier. My grandpa probably has all those tools and I could have used the door from his old cage...which would have left me with maybe $4 buying the bin. |

Those are both great sites. The "bin" on petwebsite.com seems better ventilated and more secure (latching lid). The information available from this website and its subscribers never ceases to surprise and please me. |

You could use the mesh C&C grids for the cage. |

What about welded wire mesh? It is a bit more expensive that chicken wire (at least it is in New Zealand) It is the sort of wire that is used for outdoor rabbit and guinea pig runs. You can get it in a variety of hole sizes and it is much more ridged. |

This might work. I don't have a hamster, so you probably would need other opinions on this, but it might just work 5-Section Honeycomb Cube - Silvertone : Target and coroplast |
