Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0
I am really wanting to get a Ferret soon, I found a male on a shelter online. I just want to know everthing I can before I get him (or anyone for that fact). Some of the things I would like to know is when do they get their shots and if he comes with papers does that mean he has already had them? What are the other things that I would need to know about Ferrets? Thank you |

You must keep 2 or more ferrets, but not 1 alone! |

Would that be the same rule if the shelter said that he is better alone? |

I used to have ferrets, and they got shots every year (rabies and distemper, I believe). The shelter should tell you if he has had any shots. Sometimes, as a precaution, the two vaccines should be given at different times. Some ferrets have reactions to them when given at the same time. Ferrets need to be out of their cage a minimum of four hours a day. They are very easily litter box trained, although accidents can occur. Since they are a mustelid, they can be a little stinky, even if descented. I never thought their smell was that bad if you kept their litter box clean. More than one is better, but if the ferret absolutely cannot get along with others, then yes, it is best if he's alone. A lone ferret would needs LOTS of attention from you though. They are very sneaky and steal things, so watch all of your important items. Ferrets are diggers and can tear up carpet (especially by doors) to try to dig their way to where they want to be. They are also very good at squeezing into small spaces to hide, so you will definitely have to "ferret proof" any room you give him to run around. I loved having ferrets. They're so fun! It's been a little over a year since I've had them, so this is all I can think of to tell you right now. Anything else you want to know, just ask. |

Try joining some ferret forums, I'm sure there's a lot of very knowledgable ferret owners out there who are more than happy to give you advice. One thing I'd really advise though, is to make sure there's no way the ferret can get anywhere near your pigs. They can be very inventive, and are great escape artists, but their instinct is to attack small rodents like guinea pigs and rabbits. So just be certain your pigs are safe, if you're going to keep any ferrets in the same house. |
