Re: Fleece for hamsters

Hamsters are notorious chewers and will most likely chew up the fleece. You're best bets are aspen chips or Care Fresh.

I would only assume they would eat that too. But I'm not too experienced with hamsters, I had two minature ones but they didn't live very long.

Re: Fleece for hamsters

Yeah, only use Aspen bedding, or there are special types of bedding made especially for Hamsters, but Aspen is best. I use the Alfapet brand because it's so soft. But remember to never use pine. There are harmful chemicals in the pine bedding, and I think cedar, too.

Re: Fleece for hamsters

No material, no fluff (both can be fatal if swallowed) and, if you can avoid it, no wooden chips or shavings (have had problems with allergies in sensitive Syrians and irritation of the lining of their pouches). Carefresh is probably the best bedding for the floor of their cage. If they have a small hamster house, plain unscented toilet paper is the best option - they adore shredding it.

This is SO true. Wynnie goes crazy when I put a sheet or two of TP in her cage for her to play with, and don't get me started on the hammy cuteness of her playing with a TP roll that I've spiral cut for her. She jumps on it like it's a trampoline. I use Carefresh purely because I want the cage to look as girly as possible, and the pure white with lavendar and pink mixed in does that quite nicely.

It's brilliant, isn't it? If I give mine TP and some egg she goes absolutely daft - her two favourite things. We only get old grey Carefresh over here and it's very expensive, but even our vet tells us to stay away from wood shavings of any form - I've had baldy hamsters even with expensive wood shavings. Hams are great, pity they don't live very long .

Re: Fleece for hamsters

I started with the Carefresh on my last hamster when he was getting quite old. Bailey had started losing most of his hair, and when I took him in to the vet, I was told that it was a sign of his age. Upon closer examination, they also found a tumor in his belly. We decided not to traumatize the little guy with surgery, so I fluffed up his cage with the Carefresh to make it nice and soft and warm against his mostly bare skin.

I tried putting the rest of a bag in Percy's cage once though, and he hated the stuff. He actually pushed it all to one side and laid down on the bare cage floor. Pigs are just wierd sometimes.
