Hamster Cages?

What is the best cage for a hamster?
This is what I have now.
I alos have this Sometimes I connect them together with tubes so there is two of them, is that big enough? I dont have it conneted anymore because we made the gp cage bigger so now we don't have enough room, I put her in my room but she makes so much noise biting the wire, how do you get them to stop?

I want to get something like this though, is it big enough?

Re: Hamster Cages?

I have the green and purple one, but I don't think SuperBill is really thrilled with it. I don't know, maybe I'm just reading her wrong. She likes the petting station. I was actually looking at the last one picured but I didn't like the wheel in it.

Re: Hamster Cages?

The pink one sucks for ventilation. I don't recommend it. The second one is too small, in my opinion. The third one is good, I think you have to be careful of the levels and them falling off of them.

I think the best hamster cage is a large tote bin or a 20 gallon long aqauarium.

Re: Hamster Cages?

I adopted Wynnie in a tote bin, but I didn't like the way it looked, and she didn't seem too thrilled. Besides, her original wheel was wire and that HAD to go! She's in one of the cages that the petstores always say is good for a guinea pig now, but is obviously too small. It's similar to this http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444177 7162&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026350&ASSORT MENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023695&bmUID=1137601694 280, but the pan is a bit longer and blue. She also has a solid silent (thank goodness) wheel, a grass roly nest, a set of small multi color fiddle sticks, and a little wooden house. All complimented with lavendar and white CareFresh and a pink water bottle. Very girly hammie chic!

Re: Hamster Cages?

Speaking of hamster homes, my Gracie has been living in a small petstore cage, wire frame cage with plastic tray at bottom. She is being upgraded tomorrow to a 58 quart plastic storage container. My dad cut a hole out in the lid for ventilation and I am covering it with fine wire mesh to prevent escapes. Gracie has a small solid wheel on a stand but I just got her the larger one but it wouldn't fit in her petstore cage, some tubes from my old Hartz cage, her straw hut, water bottle and food dish. With the upgrade her new wheel will fit and I will have room to put some play tubes in there as well.

I don't know if it will work or not because I haven't measured it but I am thinking of taking one of my 1/2 grids that was leftover from the piggers cage and making a small shelf for Gracie in her new home. I could cover it in coroplast and it would give her more room. I could make holes in the sides of the tub and secure the shelf with zip ties.

My gerbil, Jirby, has been living in one of these containers for a while now and it provides adequate room for exercise and play.

Re: Hamster Cages?

I've heard of hamsters easily escaping the crittertrail cages. And yes, ventilation can be a problem with those cages too.

I have a ferplast liza cage for my dwarf hamster. It's pictured here: http://www.ferplast.it/en/pagina_136142.html.

I picked it because of its size, it's well ventilated & there are lots of climbing choices (she loves hanging upside down on the wires as well as running through the tubes). It's also not too high, so I don't have to worry about her falling & hurting herself.

She lives at my boyfriends place & he always puts a big pile of hay in the cage. She'll pile that up in one corner of the cage, over her hidey house & make several tunnels through it.

Re: Hamster Cages?

This is a picture, you can't see it that well but it is the top picture in my first post. I keep the top off at all times, she doesn't get out either.

Re: Hamster Cages?

When I had my hammie I had her in a Crittertrail 2. It was good for her because she was old and it was pretty easy for her to get around in. She would roll across the top of the wheel to get to the other side for water. Lol. It worked really well for me. If your hammie is young and still very active maybe you could get the Crittertrail 3. It's the same size on the base...it just has 3 levels. So it's just a bit more room.

Re: Hamster Cages?

My daughter has had a CR1 since November and I'm tired of taking it apart each week to clean it , although it doesn't take long. I got it at a yard sale for $1. We clean it together so it's not too bad-there are more pros than cons, I think. If I was starting from scratch, I'd use a tote bin, though. There are millions of sizes and heights and colors now. Kriket, what was it about that wheel you didn't like? I felt it took too much room inside the cage so I got one that sits outside the cage via a t-tube connector. And Slap, aren't the glass aquariums too heavy to be toting back and forth to the bathroom to clean? I bought one at a thrift shop( yes I'm frugal!) But haven't used it yet.Or do you just clean it in the room it's in?

Re: Hamster Cages?

For my first hamster I used an aquarium and it took why to long to lug that thing and then wash is in the tub, with my plastic cages I do it in the sick and it is so much better.

I can't quite remember the reason I gave hubby for not liking the wheel. I know it did take up a large portion of the cage, and actually I think I just didn't like the overall design of the wheel. SuperBill was in a habitrail spacestation, and I loved that wheel because it had a nice lip so when she got running good she would not fly out. It hink that was one of my problems with that wheel, the lack of a lip. I like the crittertrail one I ended up getting, and SuperBill seems to have taken to it as well although she refuses to let us watch her run in her wheel, heh. The tubes are a little small, and if Bill was any bigger she wouldn't fit in them, but since she's full grown, it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Hamster Cages?

My hammie lives in a zoozone two with mesh over the top bars. Naff for cavys, but it's a pretty good home for one rather cranky old hamster I would have made her a bin, but I had it anyway, and she gets even more space like this.

http://www.seapets.co.uk/product-det...egory/401.html

As another point, standard sized hamster wheels are not good for your hamster's back. They really need one that's at least 8" - the size most petstores sell for rats.
