Re: My hedgehog's new cage!

What is a good sized cage for a single hedgie? and are they like GP's where they like to have buddies?

Question Re: My hedgehog's new cage!

Does your hedgie have a wheel? It's VERY inportant that hedgehogs have bucket style wheels that are at least 12". They actually walk about 7 miles a night in the wild!

I also noticed that you are using shavings. Many hedgie owners have switched over to fleece liners. They work wonderfully! I put puppy pads underneath my hedgies wheels because most hedgies go to the bathroom while they are wheeling.

I do hedgie rescue and have lots of great sites that I can send you if you want. Please feel free to ask me any questions!

Thanks,
Julie

I'm getting him a wheel for chistmas! It is £15 so I hope he uses it!
About shavings? Can they actually cause problems or do you just suggest it because it's easier?

Thanks!

Re: My hedgehog's new cage!

I overlooked this thread when it first came about and found it today. I want to address something though.

Quote:
This site is against showing run by breeders..etc.. He only comes along to pet shows. They are much different and I thought they were okay and were allowed on this site Many people on here take their guinea pigs to those type of shows I thought.
This site is against showing period. No members that I know of here that are respectable/respected members take their guinea pigs to shows. It is not ok and not allowed on this site to discuss any type of "how-to" showing discussions. When we say anti-breeding that means we don't condone breeding and when we say anti-showing that includes any type of shows whether they are by a breeder or not.

I'm so happy that you are getting your hedgie a wheel! He is very handsome but a bit overweight. Have you been weighing him? I weigh all of my small critters with a digital kitchen scale every week. It's one of the best ways to catch any health problems.

As far as the fleece goes, I like it better because it doesn't have dust or particles that can get stuck in hedgies privates. It's so much cleaner then shavings. If you stick with the shavings make sure that it is Aspen. What kind of food are you feeding him? Do you supplement with meal worms?

Re: My hedgehog's new cage!

Okay, I might change to fleece or towels. I'm not sure what type shavings it is - someone just suggested it and told me that's what they keep their animals on and they are fine. But since my guinea pigs are getting a change of bedding soon, Oscar will too!

Yeah, he gets mealworms. How much should he eat a day? I'm worried he might be having too much because you said about his weight.

Re: My hedgehog's new cage!

He has a lovely cage.. it looks nice and roomy. He's gorgeous too.. I've always wanted one, but my husband says I have enough pets.

Hopefully one day he'll give in.. I just got to get him around one.

What do they feel like?

Re: My hedgehog's new cage!

As long as he has his spines laid flat it feels quite cool to stroke. Though he prefers to be stroked where he has hair more. He hates being touched around his belly though males have a little something where you'd think there belly button should be so I guess he wouldn't like being touched there. When he's in a bad mood, not a good idea to stroke him!

If you do switch stick with fleece. Towels can be dangerous for hedgies as they can get the little loops of fabric stuck on their feet. Many hedgies have had to have feet/legs amputated because of this.

Did you check out the sites I listed? They will give you great info on food. I wouldn't give more than 4-5 mealworms a day. They are fattening. Do you feed him some sort of dry food? They should have a mix of high end cat foods too. Many of the foods marketed for hedgies are terrible. Check out the first site I gave you for food recommendations. It should be high in protein and low in fat.

They also need to stay warm. I keep a small space heater in the hedgies room set on a minimum of 70 degrees F. I also keep a Snuggle Safe Disc from Petsmart on one side of his cage. You could also use a heating pad set on low underneath his cage, on one side.

Keep those hedgies warm!
Julie

He sounds like so much fun. They just look like they have so much character. I'm wanting one more and more. Give him a stroke on the head for me.
