Re: 300 guinea pigs found in home

This is horrible. I am hoping our New Orleans mod will comment on this. Such a shame. I hope they can find homes, but I bet many will have to be put to sleep. Why do people do this? Is it a mental condition?

Re: 300 guinea pigs found in home

The only Aachen Google knows about is in Germany, and if you Google Aachen and guinea pigs, that news story from there was printed or reported in many media outlets. I think the person who posted this just happened to get it from a New Orleans TV station.

Oh, I see. I wondered why they used the term "flat". That makes sense, thanks for clarifying.

Re: 300 guinea pigs found in home

Oops. I thought it was in the U.S since it was on the news. I assumed it was a hoarder but maybe a breeder? Or both?

Hope they can be adopted out rather than put down.

eta: Here is a link with more info Filthy flat filled with 300 abandoned guinea pigs - The Local

There were about 30 running around on the ground in garbage. I don't know how one person can 'sneak' that many guinea pigs into the apartment without anyone knowing?

Re: 300 guinea pigs found in home

It's so sad. It could be an instance where the person was neither a hoarder nor a breeder. If they simply let the guinea pigs mingle, free range, babies will happen.

Did you read all the comments on that page about them? They were talking about how guineas are eaten and saying all this rude stuff about them

Well, in some countries, guinea pigs ARE very commonly eaten. But I did see the rude comments basically saying "They're just rodents, they eat their own poop anyway, what's the big deal?" It sounded to me like just some people trying to get a rise out of the animal lovers.

Yes, unfortunately animal hoarding is a mental condition. The hoarders are unable to see that the animals are suffering and in their mind, they are taking good care of the animals. It really is a shame and ranks as worst in my book right next to Munchausen by proxy syndrome.

Here is a link about it in the Psychiatirc Times: People Who Hoard Animals - Psychiatric Times

I know that they are eaten and think it is very sad and the "oh they eat their own poop anyway" those comments were insane!

All I can say is ignorance is bliss...to the person who had all those poor piggies and to the stupid comments made.

That is so sad. Hearing things like that just make me ill. I hope the piggies can be nursed back to health and find loving homes that they deserve.
