Sad: Dog dies horrific death

I was riding with my parents about 14 years ago, in the center lane, and they tried to stop, but hit two dogs who were running across one of the busiest roads on this side of town. One dog ran off, and the other sat there, howling. Hardly anyone stopped to help us, but after about 5 minutes of discussion and my mom and I talking to and petting the dog, we took him to the emergency vet and even paid for him to be seen. We couldn't see anything wrong on the outside except for some bruising around his eye. The worst thing wrong with him was a black eye and a concussion, and he went on to be adopted by one of the vet techs before we could come back and get him from the animal hospital (we had said we weren't going to take him, but then had a change of heart a day and a half later)... it's just unfathomable to me to want to beat whatever life is left out of something. Period.
