The shooting was bad enough, but the comment!!! Really...I know this is said so much, but how do people think that way?!
That is a real shame. The whole thing might have been avoided if someone had just put a leash on the rotweiler. Illinois does not have conceal carry at this time. Everybody needs to leash their dogs. The article doesn't say much though. It does not say whether the man was at an off-leash dog park or not though. If that was the case the man with the gun was definatley in the wrong. Well, hopefully he saved his puppy's life. It is too bad that he had to kill a dog to save his though.
I heard it on the radio today and the dog was on a leash but it broke loose.
That is sad. So the owner of the rotweiler was being responsible. That dog must of been strong. There had to of been a different way to handle the situation.
It is just another example of a lazy owner. The whole incident could have been totally avoided if the guy who shot the dog trained his dog properly.
I'm a little disturbed about the gun factor... I don't know what any states laws are about that so I won't comment. However I don't feel this owner did anything wrong defending his dog.
This is what I get from the situation. IMO the man with the leashed labrador was being responsible. Dog on leash. So please tell me how he could have been more responsible and trained it properly?? ((Not to mention if its a pup, training is probably in the works)). If another dog came and attacked this dog, no strength would have gotten this rotti off and this man could have been seriously injured himself trying. Any human getting involved in a dog fight takes serious risk of having the dog turn on THEM. So I'm sure he felt he did what was safe before his dog was killed or before he was attacked himself.
The owner of the Rotti, if knowing it was aggressive, the video on the first page states the dog had been running off-leash and chasing wildlife. How is that a responsible? Even if the dog broke lead, better precautions should have been taken by the owner for an aggressive dog.
I can say, if ANY dog was to attack mine ... I am not going to be nice and stand by and let it kill or seriously hurt my dog. I am going to do whatever I can to get it off and to protect myself and my dog. I have been intuation before.

This makes no sense at all.. the guy who shot the loose dog was the one who was defending his own leashed dog. Trained or not, that lab probably woulda been squished by the rotti. As for the rotti being trained, or lack of training is the owner's fault. In this case, the dog was punished for the owner's irresponsibility.
No amount of training can kill instinct in animals.. unless totally brainwashed or sent to public schools. Look around, even humans aren't domesticated. There's still crime.
When you have an animal, we have a responsibility to care for it in all aspects. When you own a potentially dangerous dog it is YOUR responsibility that it is secure and safe when in public.
I remember seeing a story on my local news about a lady whose dogs got out and attacked another dog and then the owner who was attempting to save his dogs life. It was the 3rd incident involving the two dogs getting out and becoming violent. The dogs were registered as "dangerous" since the 1st incident. When your dog is registered as violent you must abide by rules given to you or your dog will be put to sleep (muzzle when outside home, higher more secure fences, etc). This was the third time this persons dogs have gotten out and attacked somebody. She was interviewed and made statements like "my dogs are good dogs, and I will get them back, they wouldnt hurt a fly..." blah blah blah. I have NO sympathy for her, there shouldn't have been 2nd or third incidences after the 1st. If she truly cared for her dogs she would not have been so irresponsible. She sent her own dogs to a death sentence at animal control because she was arrogant and acted irresponsibly.
It was the owner of the rottweiler's fault for what happened, because it should not have happened in the first place. The owner knew his dog was was a threat to other dogs, but did not practice any safety precautions to prevent him from seriously injuring someone elses dog. The owner of the lab was just trying to protect his dog. If you cant handle the your animal, then you shouldn't have it in the first place. Its simple.
It is a bad situation all around, but put yourself in the shoes of the guy who was walking his dog on a leash, not bothering anyone. It does say he tried to get the dogs apart before he shot the the rottie. The shooting appears to have been a last resort. I would have shot the attacking dog, too as I could not stand by and watch my own dog be mauled to death. Plus what sort of danger would I be in myself? What if that dog chewed up my pet, then went after me? While we all here value animal life, there are times when we have to decide just what animal's life we value more. It is not a fun decision to have to make and one I would not want to have to make, but it happens. We all would value the life of our own dog above that of the dog attacking it. We would do what is necessary to protect our dog and ourselves. It is unfortunate that some people are too ignorant to train their dogs properly and the untrained dog pays the price.
At the risk of sounding old fashioned (even though I am only in my 30's) 'what is the world coming too?'
There is so much violence and hatred everywhere. It is such a shame when life is so short. My thoughts go out to people who are in these situations.
I think people who have their dogs off-leash need to be more responsible. I will have my dog off leash only when I am deep into the park and there is no one else there. The best time for that is around 6am, it is also legal at this time. It wouldn't be appropriate to have him off leash in mid afternoon on a warm day when the park is generally pretty crowded. My dog also is very well behaved and listens to my commands, he will stop and walk back to me when i ask him to. If I see any other dogs or pedestrians in the area, i immediately leash him, as you cannot predict if the other dog is friendly or aggressive towards other dogs by the way he looks. I have encountered some dog aggressive Labradors and friendly outgoing rotties. It is stupid for anyone to let their dog off leash during the peak hours at a park, no matter how well behaved the dog is.
