Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Pet store chain linked to puppy mills - Pet health- msnbc.com I really dislike the USDA right now. Wait till you guys read that humane conditions and treatment of animals in animal breeding mills, such as puppy mills (not to forget small animal mills), is "low-priority" to them (to the USDA, I meant. And they're the ones who "regulate" the mills. Un-buh-freakin-leave-able.) So, uh, whats high priority to them? Whats so important that humane treatment and conditions for animals in breeding mills seems as ridiculous to them as "plant welfare" would obviously seem? They're implying that ensuring humane treatment and conditions for animals in mills is the same as making sure that grass is humanely treated as it is made into hay. Pfffft. Oh well. What do you all think? Just click on the link and read the article first before you comment, so you know exactly what I'm talking about. Oh yeah, the article is basically about the infamous Petland chain. The HSUS has been conducting an extensive investigation to help prove the accusations that Petland was reselling puppies from unregulated and "regulated" large-scale breeding mills. The investigation recently came to a close, and it was quite successful. Yay!! This is a good part, at least. Maybe President Elect Obama can/will do something about animal mills, like passing a permanent law that prohibits mills. Its time for a change. Yes we can. Hope. Darn right. Especially pertaining to this issue. |

Thank you for sharing. Also, When you click on the "low priority" link it goes to a page that is even more in-depth about the situation. I recently signed a petition that goes to lawmakers in my region regarding the wish to ban puppy mills. With that petition, the volunteer group sent the request in for me, but we can all write in our requests with just a little time on our part. |

I'm not surprised either Taboo. All pet stores who sell any animal whether it's fish or dogs are horrible people. They're just in it for the money. They don't even realize that there's a whole bunch of jobs out there that can make you richer then selling animals that they claim are ''healthy''. Also, they don't even think about what it would be like to be standing in a small wire cage 24/7 with little food, water, movement and hygiene. And, they don't realize that they can be arrested for that kind of stuff. |

I wonder why they don't think "hey, maybe if we sold healthy animals in good conditions and sold safe products on our shelves we may make MORE money since some people boycott our petstore because of this" ? I would if I owned a petshop. |

Taboo, I used to own a pet store and sold only proper items. I never sold any animals because there was an adoption agency next door. I typed up some pages on how to properly care for different animals and passed them out for free. I wish more people would act like that and help animals out instead of ruining their lives. |

I agree. I have wanted to start a petstore like that my whole life as well as start a rescue, and I may even ditch going to college to become a vet tech to do so. |

I don't think Obama ment change as in putting laws of how animals can/can't be sold. Not to mention, as president, he doesn't nearly have much as power as congress. If liberals really cared about animal conditions over our economy and other situations our country is currently facing, the liberal congress would have already been doing something about it. It has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative, we just need someone who notices what goes on and has the heart to do something about it. |

I'm going to try getting my volunteer job place, Pet Harmony, which is run for Animal Compassion Network, to include cavies. Most people assume that pet stores get small animal companions from "breeders", but they think its someone responsible that lives in their own house and could be a neighbor or something, they think that there are only puppy mills, they don't have any idea there are small animal and parrot mills. I'm so excited about this, I hope ACN will agree, as long as they believe me when I tell them about other-animal species mills. |

If the economy is bad, you might lose your jobs. If that happens, how will you pay for vet bills? |
