I asked my anatomy teacher yesterday, and he said the cats that we'll be getting came from shelters where they were euthanized for lack of space, and because they didn't get adopted in time.

They could all come from shelters, I don't think there is a need for breeding farms to exist to supply preserved animals to dissection people. With the amount of animals euthanized every day, they could easily stop or greatly let up on the pet rendering into carnivore food trade, and donate them to companies that preserve them and sell to schools and colleges that need them to dissect instead. Breeding an animal just to euthanize it for dissection purposes is unethical in my opinion.

Also, I'm 18 now, so I don't need to worry about what a minor is anymore. Thanks for the info though! A friend told me that in school, so maybe she was wrong. She was in the criminal justice course though....so I don't know.

Not to be rude, but she didn't pay attention or something, because ANYONE under 18 Is a minor. Period. Only exception is the emacipated 17 year old.

Re: Disection protester

Exactly sophistacavy. There are plenty of animals that are euthanized that can be used for dissecting (for vet and vet tech schools). Breeding farms for dissecting, IMO, are not needed, and, unethical.
And yeah, anyone under 18 is a minor.

Re: Disection protester

What kind of animals are being dissected in class ? I agree that they could use dogs and cats that are doomed to be euthanized, but what about the smaller animals they need for dissections? Are their enough birds and rodents for this too? Because if there really is enough of those for the millions of kids going through dissections, then we should work to get this going. Also, I have a question regarding feeder mice/pinky mice ect. What are the views on those, and what does someone do if they have a carnivorous pet?

Re: Disection protester

As far as I know it is mainly cats and dogs that are dissected (am I right?). There are plenty of small animals that are euthanized. There are a lot in shelters, but you don't see them because they are in the back, because they don't have the room or proper caging where cats and dogs are, and it would scare the living day lights out of them if they were near cats or dogs. Birds, I don't know, but probably. We have cats, but they aren't fed mice, they eat chicken, turkey, and sometimes rabbit (we get it from a very humane and ethical place online). I can't remember the thread name, but it was a little while ago someone asked about feeder mice etc. I'll look for it so you can see it.

ETA- Just found it. Here it is: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ht=feeder+mice

Re: Disection protester

My highschool disected fetal pigs in Biology 2. Ive never been to vet tech school, but I know cats are often disected (probably because so many are put down due to being picked up by animal control because people dont get their animals fixed!!).
