SunHerald.com : Lost and unwanted: Euthanasia rate rises to 70 percent at Humane Society Poor things. I wonder if there is anything I can do to help them. I live no where near there, though |

The only thing that we can do is to keep spreading the word about adoption and inform people of this happening. If people would think twice about buying an animal we would not have to euthanize so many animals. |

Also we need to spread how important it is to spay and nueter (spelling) your pets. Every spring every shelter is full to over flowing with puppies and kittens. Keep spreading the word. One day it will be wonderful to hear. No animals to be sold and no animal will have to be put to sleep. |

I once read that 73% of the dogs put to sleep in shelters in New York were Staffordshire terriers (im sorry, i cant stand the nickname of "pit-bull"). Its mostly those people that have a dog in the back, and the breed them from time to time to make extra cash. I met a guy at a dog park that had an out of control, over energized brindle Staffordshire. I suggested that he have his dog neutered, because it would help him calm down. He shrugged and told me "I'm gonna breed 'em." Its just disgusting how these people are breeding their dogs for some quick cash when millions are dying in shelters. Its just disgusting. These people don't care, animals are just objects to them. Ugh. |

People also need to be educated on the fact that pets are not disposable. Too often a person will purchase an animal on a whim and then find out that they have behavioral issues, they make a mess, they're expensive and time-consuming to care for and so they ditch them at the local shelter. People love cute little puppies and kittens, so it's the older, "less desirable" pets that meet a cruel fate in the kill shelters. It's unfortunate. |
