PETA Plans Naked Downtown Protest - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines I'm not a big fan of protests, I tend to think of them as a way to get attention, but not truly advocate yoru cause. I wish them the best, but I think it's a circus and protestors of any cause would be better off just trying to educate on their cause rather than making a spectacle of themselves. It reminds me of the circus protest they had about 10 years or so ago. A woman wearing nothing but tiger stripe paint, some pasties, and a thong was in a cage symbolizing the plight of circus animals. Nobody talked about the conditions of the circus animals in the days afterwards. They all talked about how disgraceful/really hot/etc. the nearly naked woman was. As for this protest, I've heard a lot of comments about going down to Nollen Plaza where the protest is and eating a hamburger, etc. or treating it like some kind of peep show. I don't know, but I don't think such antics help the cause. *sighs* I believe PETA's efforts to let people know the truth, like the "Meet Your MEat" video have way more impact. |

I'm afraid far too many of PETA's so-called documentaries and reports have been proven to be horribly biased or completely inaccurate for me to support them in anything they do anymore. Stunts like this just take away yet more of what little credability the organisation has left. |

I get why people protest. And seeing a large group of people always grabs my attention so why do they have to be naked? It just seems like they will get themselves in trouble for indecent exposure. That stunt would get the most attention and not true message they wanted to get across. |

Honestly they just make themselves look bad whenever they do that kind of thing. It would be fine if it was just a protest, but a naked one is taking it way too far. |

If you want to be taken seriously and obtain the attention of others, you must be: tactful, respectful of those around you, open minded and knowledgeable on the topics being addressed, and have a solid ground on what realistically can be done to make a positive change. Otherwise what you've accomplished is nothing short of looking like a fool, and failure of trying to support a worthy cause and a negative stigmatism of a cause trying to gain support. I once wanted to join PETA however that all changed when my daugther brought home their flyers and magazines and it to me seemed to be way to extreme that I honestly believed they inflated and dramatized stories to gain support. Hell, I can't even watch Animal Cops without crying and having bad dreams....and I'm 44. I've, gotten better...when I see an opportunity to educate someone, I do my best at being unobtrusive, unoffensive and try to develope an atmosphere were people walk away feeling like they learned something interesting and important. I also try to attempt to create a converstation that makes people intested in learning more. I truly believe that an organization can be quite powerful if they behaved in a moral and respectable manner. A naked women painted in tiger garb wearing a thong, is behaving like a "circus freak" and I certainly would be disgusted and walk away forgetting what the cause was for. It's sad. |
