Not signed. This isn't taking place in America, I'm not familiar with the cultura reasons surrounding it. Cruel? Yes, though people in India think we are barbarians for eating cows as well.

Its not only people in India who think American people are barbarians for eating cows.

I signed, that is horrible! I don't care where you are from, it doesn't make it right. The pigs can still feel pain.

ctinaw - as a meat eater it isn't the fact they are raising and slaughtering pigs that bothers me, it is the fact they are DELIBERATELY over feeding and force feeding to make the pigs as huge as possible, so that they can't even get up! Culture be blowed, that is abuse.

I never said it was right and I never said that they couldn't feel pain. Please don't put words in my mouth.

Only the first part was meant as a comment to your previous one. I was not putting words in your mouth, just stating facts.

Re: Pig abuse - please help

They are being cruel to those animals. That's wrong, regardless of culture. I think ctinaw is saying, and I'd agree, that we can't condemn the whole event nor the people as we simply don't have enough information to do so fairly.
Eating pigs is ok. A parade is ok, nothing wrong with celebrating an abundant harvest, be it wheat or meat. But force feeding an animal is wrong. We're all in agreement, right?

I don't agree that eating pigs ok, but I am not going to get into that.

Basically - yes. I understand that in some cultures - traditions such as this - no matter how odd or sick we find it - have a deep meaning for them religiously or culturally. I've also read some other articles with quite a different slant to this event than what's being portrayed here. Their intention is not to make the animal suffer - even though that is obviously what is going on. I love animals but I also have respect for other country's cultures and don't feel the need to interfere.

Re: Pig abuse - please help

So you see culture as an excuse for mistreatment of animals? That's not a very helpful attitude when it comes to promoting animal welfare :/

Religion, culture or traditions are no excuse for cruelty. Ever.
