Why not to go to Peru

I saw this and almost cried...It made me want to go home and hug Lazlo and Red immediately!

Re: Why not to go to Peru

The last sentance is the worst :
"This isn't common," said Nicolas Campos Sanchez, his lips shiny with grease as he ate a mouthful of barbecued guinea pig. "We're very proud of it."

Sadly, it's just how it is done in other countries - China eats dogs, Peru eats guinea pigs...England eat rabbits though...

I'm just pointing out that countries do things differently though I completlyt agree with SJane and 5piglover - I need to hug my pigs now

Re: Why not to go to Peru

Considering I don't eat any animals I guess there is no place in the world I can go where the people won't eat something I see as a "pet".

Different people in different cultures eat many different things. When I was in Haiti they served dove. I had 2 pet doves at that time. I did not judge these people who were so poor that they could hardly get enough to survive. Instead, since I was in their culture and it would have horribly offensive to refuse, I ate some dove. Despite the fact that I was a vegetarian. They took me into their homes and took care of me like family. To judge them would have been horribly egotistic and rude of me.

You cannot overly judge cultures. You and I may not think it is right but it is they "way". We can try to reeducate if we see cruelty and refuse to eat those animals ourselves but judging Peru for eating guinea pigs would be like judging America for eating beef and chicken and even more pet type of animals like rabbit.

Judging accomplished nothing. Reeducation and active work to improve plant food growing campaigns is what works.

As a side note. This is nothing new around here. There are many other threads exactly like this one. I'm considering combining them all and stickying them in the Kitchen to keep them all together.

Re: Why not to go to Peru

I do agree Voodoojoint, I ama strong beliver in excepting other people as they are. It just makes me sad to see those loveable creatures being killed when there are many other things to eat.

Re: Why not to go to Peru

One of my good friends is from Ecuador. When I told her I got two guinea pigs she thought I was referring to dinner that night :\

She thinks they're cute! Cute but tasty. Apparently her grandmother keeps about 20 in a shed behind her house (in Ecuador, not NC) so they're in ready supply. I don't want to think about what conditions those guys and gals are in.

I know; I know; different cultures = different values, but my piggies will not be served on a plate!

Re: Why not to go to Peru

I agree with VJ. I don't judge cultures by what they eat. I have some a friend that is from peru and he does not eat guinea pig aswell as my other friend from ecuador.

Re: Why not to go to Peru

I look at it this way: if gps were not being raised for food by the native peoples of Peru, they might have been noticed by European explorers and brought to Europe and thence to the US to be our cuddly little pets!
