Re: Bush signs against animal fighting

Thanks Landhermie. Dog fighting is a problem in and around Hartford and what the breeders do to those dogs is beyond belief. It is also a status thing for drug dealers to have the biggest meanest looking pit bull they can find on a great big chain because it is soooo cool. I though about relating a story of what happened to one pit bull in Hartford, but children post here so I won't.

I am so glad to hear that. Dog fighting is a problem everywhere to the point the some states/areas has banned Pitbulls altogether.

Ditto. Bush has done very few things I could ever thank him for- this is one of them.

That's very good news, although (not to be negative!) it sounds like something that should have been done decades ago. Here in the city I live in, we have a lot of homeless people who sort of have that "tough" look going on, and they often have dogs with them. I bet a lot of people feel bad for the dogs and give them money. I couldn't believe my eyes one day when I saw a group of these people and they had cats tied to leashes in a similar way! You could tell they were still kittens, and they were tied so that they couldn't wander from where the panhandlers were sitting, obviously to lure in donations. It really upset me that they would use an innocent and completely defenseless animal that way. I feel terrible for homeless people, but I also feel that there is a sub-group of people who tend to use animals in this way, and it's becoming an epidemic.

Wow. If I were homeless, I'd take my pets to a shelter if I even still had them!

I agree with everyone 100%. Here in Az is both dog (mainly pitbulls) and chicken fighting. There are so many pits here. I really hope this makes a huge difference!!!

Re: Bush signs against animal fighting

I'm glad Bush finally did something that makes sense! He means well; he just lacks common sense.....

I hope this has some impact in my area; charge those jerks with a federal crime!! Where I live dog fighting rings are very common. The state had to create a special division in law enforcement to handle the problem, that's how bad it is. >_< It was the first state to do this. Maybe such rings will stop popping up if people know they will not get a slap on the wrist.

Cock fighting has already been banned in my state last year in a very funny way. The state congress decided to pass the bill outlawing it and sentencing offenders to x amount of time in jail at the same time that they over-rode the bill about violence against women! It's nice to see what our representatives' priotries are.

Of course the real reason the law about women wasn't passed then was that they wanted more jail time and higher fines as minimum punishment for offenders. As it stood then, someone quilty of violence towards women would have served less time than one guilty of cock fighting. A reformed bill has since passed, giving offenders (of crimes aganist women) harsher punishments.

I am subscribed to a newsletter, and got an e-mail about the Bush Administration taking off all of the old endangered species off of the list!

Well, of course! How else do you open up wilderness area to oil companies and loggers? The quickest way is to say there are no endangered species therefore there are no endangered animals on the the land in question. It's just like saying there is no global warming because there's no proof and it's not that bad anyway. It's a special logic based on greed.

I know that some conversation efforts have been very successful in recent years, but I can't imagine this is true for all species on that list.

Somehow I doubt all the endangered species were taken off though. Wasn't the polar bear just added in March??

More likely those species' official status were just downgraded to "threatened." Some may qualify for that listing like the bald eagle maybe (haven't looked at their numbers lately); others clearly don't, like the Florida panther (only 87 left!). Still stupid on Bush & company's part.

But so far the only wilderness area Bush & company have tried to use for oil is that one in Alaska. How would that impact endangered species like the mantee or sea turtle? They're in Florida!

Not that I'm saying Bush's logic (or lack there of) is reasonable or anything. I just don't think that explanation explains everything.

Personally I just like thinking Bush is being stupid yet again.

You do know that most Republicans do believe in global warming, right? The problem is that they don't think humans are responsible for it; they think it's all natural.

And there is some evidence suggesting that such climate changes are normal and have occured in the past a number of times. This is not based on greed per-say; for instance some of this is based on observation of ice layers in the South Pole Greedy people just take advantage of some of these facts and use them for their own purposes, often distorting them completely.

However I find it hard to believe that humans are having no impact on this current 'climate change' at all. I think we're just making things worse.

Re: Bush signs against animal fighting

Please don't think that I am comparing Republicans to Bush! The Bush administration is all about the fat cat oil companies, not political parties.

What this endangered species thing has to do with Florida is called offshore drilling, also about the oil companies. Us tree huggers with our endangered species have sometimes gotten in the way of this whole mind set that also favors strip mining and clear-cut logging. Profit right now is much more important than the well-being of future generations, to this way of thinking.

I have heard that Bush is drinking again and that the Mrs. is living across the street? I have so much confidence in this man's stability anyway, that adding lots of alcohol makes me just a wee bit nervous.
