More news about contaminated pet food

I just saw on line that another company has just recalled dog & cat food for contaminated rice protein imported from China. Here's the link: Third company recalls pet food

There was also an article on 30 dogs dying from these contaminates in South Africa. I guess we're not through with this danger yet.

A great place to check on pet food recall updates is Pet Food Tracker.

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

What a mess! My aunt's dog died because of this in the middle of March. In fact I think he might have been one of the first fatalities. He developed kidney failure at the age of 9 yrs but had no evidence of it at his last checkup in November '06. He was fed Alpo canned for the most part, but my relatives occansionally fed him Iams canned food (both mixed with dry). Both of those brands have now recalled some of their stock, though Alpo only had a voluntary recall.

The sad thing is that a Hill's prescription diet for cats was also recalled of all things. That's only available thru vet clinics! You would think that those types of foods would be the safest since it's specially designed for pets with certain diseases. So feeding a sick cat this food could have made it sicker with kidney problems.

I'm thankful that the food we feed our dogs hasn't been impacted by this. So far Pedigree and Beneful are still safe. Still I feel so bad for other owners who feel they have to switch foods now or have a pet that has gotten sick or died from this.

I've heard there's now concern of it being in human food because the contaminated glutean was fed to chickens and pigs intended for slaughter. Though they don't think this would cause kidney problems for people....

Edit:
I wasn't aware that this was affecting other countries (besides Canada of course). I had thought this batch of glutean was only intended for North American pet food companies. It's awful that other countries are also having problems. I hope these companies learn from this so that pet food is safer.

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

I think the people who have had pets die because of this should sue, even though they'll only get how much money their pet is worth. It is the only way to get them to pay for what they have done. Eventually, it will accumulate.

My aunt doesn't want to. She said it will cost more to pay a lawyer and go thru court procedings than what she'll prob. win in a lawsuit. The most she can get is like $500; her dog came from the shelter, so most of that money would only be the cost of emergency care when the dog became sick. She also doesn't want to go thru the pain and guilt that she felt from her dog's death.

I think that is keeping a lot of people from suing.... for the moment at least.

Maybe things will change though.

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

lakota, please check the web site that landhermie posted. Beneful is now on the list and I believe pedigree is too. Fish meal thatfish farm fish are fed on is also affected. Somehow when the government says that chicken fish & pork that was fed this stuff probably won't hurt humans, I'm not too happy with that. Good luck to all with pets at risk.

I lost my George, a golden chocolate lab mix, almost five years ago, but I have read this is not the first time this has happened, just the biggest. George died after eating a sample packet of Iams that came in the mail and I really think that's what killed him. They could offer me a million dollars but I would rather have my George. After spending $1100.00, all I have are his ashes.

Oh no! Thanks for the update. Well, I've been thinking of switching one of my dogs to another food due to possible food allergies (need a new protein and plant sources), but now I might just do all 3 of them. I just hope one of them will eat a new food-- she is just so picky! In fact she was the reason we started mixing in canned Beneful food.

I went to both those pet foods' websites recently, and both claimed not to be on the recall list. That's why I said my dogs' food wasn't affected.

And yes I did look at the site posted, but maybe I just missed those two-- that happens to me a lot.

Do you know which specfic foods from those brands that are affected?

That's how my aunt feels too-- nothing can replace their dog. She just doesn't want other people going thru what she and her family went thru.

Edit:
I just went thru that site (again!), and I'm still not finding Pedigree or Beneful coming up as being recalled or tainted. Could you please tell me specifically where they are listed or which of their foods are affected?

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

I know I read beneful, dry somewhere because that's what my dogs were eating, but I didn't see it on this web site either. I have to go to a softball game now but will try to research later. I have been reading everything I can find on this issue, so must've been somewhere else.

Thanks for looking as well. We only use canned Beneful though.

I've heard some negative things about Beneful, but nothing in regards to it being on the recall list. Maybe you read general complaints about that product line? Still considering it's one of Purina's lines and Purina is on the list, I can see why we should be concerned.

Pedigree's site still claims that their food is safe; apparently they use a different supplier or a different plant.... something along those lines.

Link to their statement:
Pedigree.com - Pet Food Recall

(I hope it is okay to link to this site)

Does anyone know if diarrhea is a sign of the sickness?

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

I believe so, along with lethargy (no energy) and loss of appetite, then vomiting. I hope you're not asking because you have a sick dog, landhermie?

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

Sandy, my kitten, had both diarrhea and has puked recently. She doesn't seem lethargic, though.

Re: More news about contaminated pet food

Below is a list of symptoms from Yahoo news A: Symptoms include loss of appetite, loss of energy, diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive thirst or urination.
Q: What should I do if I notice these symptoms?
A: Contact the pet's veterinarian immediately. Simple blood and urine tests can determine whether the pet has been affected. The problem can be treated if caught early.

I hope this helps.
