Shelter forced to kill 1,000 dogs and cats - CNN.com
Basically, a shelter in Las Vegas decided to adopt a no-kill policy. In addition to this, they incorrectly vaccinated all of their animals (if they actually vaccinated them at all.) The result was a horribly overcrowded shelter where distemper and parvo ran rampant in dogs and panleukopenia ran rampant in cats.
Over 1,000 animals were - or are to be - euthanized. All those infected will be euthanized, and some animals who have been at the shelter "too long" (over 120 days) will - are already have been - euthanized.
The shelter will institute a new policy of euthanizing any unadopted animal after 72 hours.
This is the largest mass killing of animals in the city's history.
