Deplorable "home" for pets

There is a story in my local newspaper this morning about older siblings living together in which the sister had died. They had over 80 dogs and cats, and some birds. The birds were removed by a relative. The dogs and cats fed on dead cat/dog carcasses, one dog even ate gravel to try to survive.

One person said they expected it to be bad, but this was pushing an eleven on the charts. A 20 year veteran animal rescuer said this was the worst they have ever seen.

There were about 30 carcasses throughout the property including in the house and a foot and a half of animal poop everywhere. They are not even sure they got all the dead animals because of the waste, some were buried underneath it.

The paper stated that at one point, all the animals in the couple's care were all show animals. This is so sad and disgusting, I feel so bad for the dogs and cats. I sure hope they all survive.

As for charges, they may not press any because of the man's age. He is 77 and currently in the hospital.

Removing the animals from a Coal Township house cost about $4,000 in equipment and resources, says Joe Fellencer of the Pennsylvania SPCA in Danville.

A conservative estimate indicates veterinary bills for the surviving animals will run upwards of $10,000, he said.

The PSPCA is asking for financial contributions to pay for the veterinary costs, as well as towels, blankets, food for small dogs, paper towels, bleach and other cleaning supplies, Fellencer said.

"Any donation is appreciated," he said.

Monetary and other donations may be mailed or taken to the Danville branch of the PSPCA at 2801 Bloom Road, Danville, PA.

Oh is it, that is good! Update: Some of the animals were already adopted and they were taken to several shelters, noting none were euthanized. Thank goodness. Hope they all get good homes.

"A house in Coal Township where police and humane officers found more than 100 malnourished or dying animals will be demolished.
The family of the man who owns the house said the house will be razed as soon as possible. They are in the process of getting estimates.
The house was raided last week after repeated reports of a stench coming from the place. Emergency crews were called to the home for a medical problem and found the house full of animal feces, dead animals and malnourished animals.
The man who lived in the house is out of the hospital and is being treated elsewhere. The animals were taken to several shelters, including one near Danville and the Hillside SPCA near Pottsville."

The 77 year old man is now being charged with animal cruelty. I doubt he'll go to jail though. They should throw him in some filthy conditions without a toilet and nothing decent to eat.
