Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 One of my newest piggies, Oreo who I have had for about a week now passed away earlier today, he was almost 2 years old. I didn't notice any signs or symptoms of him being sick until about 1 am yesterday and when I called the emergency vet that I had there was no answer so had to wait till they opened this morning and so I did not get any sleep last night nor today and I am worried about my other 4 remaning piggies in case Oreo had something that could be passed to them. Oreo was not eating or drinking and breathing very hard and sounded weird. My hubby and I thought he possibly had phnemonia but how can that just show up with in a few hours with no signs of anything not to mention but the vet had given him a clean bill of health less than a week previous to this. He was fine yesterday morning eating drinking and running around the cage just fine. I am stund that this happened so quickly. I was up all night last night with Oreo trying t fed him and get him to drink his water. He kept turning his head away from food and would only tape a couple od drops of water every few minutes. I called the vet early this morning as soon as they opened and on the way to the vets Oreo died. We had a little funneral here at home for him. I think I did everything that I could for him to no avail. I keep wondering if his death probably had to do with the care he recieved previous to me getting him since he was kept in a 50 gl aquarium on CEDAR bedding and was fed pellets with seeds and only given a little timothy hay per day and little to no veggies. I put him in a C&C cage with fleece and gave him veggies twice a day to start with plus unlimited hay and pellets. I am going to be keeping a very close eye on my other 4 babies and hope and pray none of them get sick. Thank you for reading this and hopefully no one will ever use Cedar bedding for any pets period it is not good. After 2 days of Oreo being fed fresh veggies he did get a little diarhia that cleared up quickly do to the change in his diet but odly Ceilli did not have any effects from the change in her diet. Ceilli and Oreo came from the same person. Oreo will be missed ever so dearly. I still can't help thinking that I must have missed a sign some where. |

He seemed happy and did many popcorns when we put him in the C&C cage and he was always the first one to greet me when it was time for veggies and when I went near the cage. I removed him from the cage that he was in with my other 2 boars as soon as I noticed that he was sick and put him in our extra C&C cage 2x3 in another room. Thank you for your condolances, |

I was at the humane society volunteering a few days ago. Their were 2 male guinea pigs on CEDAR bedding, food that had other things besides plain pellets, no hay, 1 hidey hut, in a tiny pet store cage! I felt so bad for them. I wanted to take them and bring them home with me. I don't think it was my rescues fault. I think they were JUST brought in. I would have probably convinced my mom to let me get them, except they were male and I only have a female. Rnd210- I am so sorry for your sudden loss! I'm sure you did the best you could and it wasn't your fault, at all!! Good Luck with everything! |

I'm so sorry for your loss! My little piggy is getting over pneumonia right now, it's possible that he could of had that. My piggy didn't seem to have any symptoms until one morning I woke up to her breathing heavy with a crackling sound in her breath. If you can I would get your other piggies checked out by the vet. |

My other piggies are fine right now and they have an appointment for tomorrow and the vet said that Oreo may have died from heart failure since I started feeding him more stuff then what he was used to having and it basically increased the amount of frluid around his little heart and caused his lungs to fill up with fluid to which is what killed him. He said Heart failure is not transmitted to the other piggies, But I am taking them just in case it was indeed phnemonia and not Congestive heart Failure like he thought. Thank you. My other pigs will be getting seen tomorrow. |

Just a little update on my other piggies, They are all fine with no illnesses and yes Oreo died from Heart Failure, that could have been prevented had I known he had a heart issue to begin with, but apparrently previous owner never took him to a vet. |

I am so sorry and so upset that an "Emergency Vet" has hours. It is very sad that we can lose our babies with no warning, Guinea Pigs are such good actors. You did all you could, he was lucky to have you. |

You would think that since it is an emergency vet number and everything that they should be able to see the pet regardless of the time. Last summer my son got a Tea cup Chihuahua and it wound up dying from low blood sugar complications, since we had no clue about the signs or symptoms of hypoglacemia in animals, I force fed him and got him in to the vet as soon as we finnally got ahold of one and he gave him like 2 shots and then hospitalized him and he died at the hospital 2 days later. The vet said that he could have saved him if we would have brought him in right away and we were like we called your answering service at like 2 in the morning and then again at 8 am and came in right away from there so if you blame blame yourself. Seriously if vets are going to have after hours at all then they need to be willing to see the animal then not 6 hours later. |

Yes the ceder is bad for them. What got me mad is that I went to Walmart and saw ceder bedding. It said for hamster, rabbit, dig, cat, horse, and GUINEA PIG! Who do they think they are anyway? Man, that's wasn't very smart! |
