Sometime early yesterday morning, my hamster Goldie passed away. I don't know what happened, She was completely normal...she was eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, and acting normal. She even had ate half of her veggie dinner. I came home yesterday, and I went to clean her cage, and hat's when I found her...I think she died in her sleep...peacefully...painless; at least that's what it seemed and is what I hope, cuz she was so sweet, she never bit anyone, not even the vet.
She was so smart too, she knew that when chewie and charlie were screaming that it was time for dinner and she'd get up as soon as she heard them and she'd sit and wait for me to give her her nightly treat. Everyone who met her fell in love with her, I don't know if it was her adorable face, or her charming personality but something about her, you just couldn't help but to love.
I got Goldie when she was about 5mos. old, from my sister. My sister had gotten her from a friend who had bought a hamster at petco not knowing it was already pregnant, and Goldie was one of the babies. When my sister got her she didn't take very good care of her; too small cage, cheap food, wire wheel, hardly ever cleaned the cage, no toys in cage or any human interaction etc. And after several long arguments about her care I basically "stole" her from my sister, haha, my sister wasn't so happy. But after I got her, her life drastically improved.
I tried to give her the best of everything, she had a huge cage. It was a "petstore" extra large Rabbit/Ferret cage (though waaaayyyy too small for Rabbits or Ferrets) I built up the sides with coroplast so that she couldn't escape; it was 40" L by 18" W, she loved it. I filled it with tubes to climb it, a covered wheel, and other toys to play with. I switched her to a better food (from Hartz to Hazel Hamster) which I had to drive into St. Louis (35-40ish miles) to buy, of course I usually had my friends come along and we'd go shopping after getting Goldie's food, but Goldie's food was the whole reason for the trip. Her cage was hard to clean and her food hard to get, but so worth it, a million times over. She really was amazing, heck she even used a jar as a litter box 75%-80% of the time.
I'm gonna miss her so much. She just celebrated her 2nd birthday a few weeks ago on the 3rd, she wasn't that old. She was slowing down quite a bit though, she was going blind (cataracts) and was becoming less and less active by the week. I just can't believe she's gone :'( I miss you Goldilocks.
You always were more than "just a hamster" to me.
These are the last 2 pictures I took of her, taken about 4-5 days before she died.
