Unhappy Marsha the Queen has gone

Well, we knew the end was close. Marsha the Queen piggie passed away today, at some time between 3pm and 10pm.

She had really bad arthritis. She was on metacam and baytrill and was doing fine, still eating and pooping OK, but in the past 2 days we noticed she was moving a little less at times. Last night too she refused her metacam so I had to syringe it into her mouth instead of giving it to her on cucumber.

She was 6 and a half years old, and was our first ever piggie. We got her from a pet store long before we knew better (will never buy a pet from a sop ever again, in fact I don't buy anything out of shops which sell animals).

Marsha quickly became the queen pig over Amber, Sophie, Doris and Daisy. She was a benevolent ruler, enforcing her authority with high chins and (at first) a lot of mounting. She never fought anyone. She liked to be ticked under the chin and is the only piggie who has ever licked us. She did enjoy her cuddles and loved to curl up on a pillow in front of the fire in the winter.

Her last few days - well on Thursday while I was cleaning the cage and the girls were out free ranging Marsha spent the entire time following me about and "requesting" treats. On Friday my husband was home, he was cleaning up some spilt milk in the fridge (the fridge is in the dining room, where the girls live, as our kitchen is tiny) and he looked down to see Marsha nibbling at his sandles, "requesting" another treat.

She was much loved and will be sorely missed, but as she was in pain with the arthritis part of us is glad to know she is now over the rainbow bridge with the others, healthy again. About 10 years ago a close friend of ours died, aged 27. He was a vegetarian and a big animal lover. We like to think he now looks after our piggies, and we know he will just LOVE Marsha.

Rest well, our Queen. We love you and miss you.

Janjam, I am so sorry. There is no doubt that she was deeply loved and appreciated.
