RIP Dexter

My guinea pig Dexter died Sunday afternoon at just 2 years, 2 months old. Some of you may remember Dexter as I posted on here a few months ago about how a vet prescribed him amoxicillin and about the battle to keep him alive. He fought so hard the past few months through seven medications and syringe feedings daily. He developed problems along the way, but he never quit fighting. As a matter of fact, a week-and-a-half ago, he was so normal the vet said it was OK to take him off the medications and the syringe feedings. He was back to the same old squeaky, hungry and happy Dexter. I was so happy to see him normal for a week-and-a-half. Unfortunately I noticed bad changes when I got home from work Friday night. He began having many seizures Sunday morning when I decided it was time. I got him to the emergency hospital and they sedated him, but they never needed to put him down as the sedative slowed his heartbeat gradually. He died in my arms and didn't feel anything. For that, I'm thankful.

I'll miss Dexter greatly. He was too young to go. I'll never forget that loud squeak I always heard when he heard the door open (front door or refrigerator) or if he heard the sound of a bag. I wish I could hear it now. Of course who could forget our intense battles in hide and seek! He always found a way to avoid me at the end of play time. But when he knew he had me beat, he would let me win and always had a kiss waiting (he loved to lick my nose).

I'll miss you, Dexter, and I'll always love you. RIP to my "Baby Boy."

Re: RIP Dexter

I'm so sorry. It sounds like Dexter was a very special, ornery little guy who really enjoyed life with you.

Rest in peace little one.
