Jess is gone

I feel really horrible because I know that it is my fault that she is not here. PLease no one get mad at me right away because I know that it is my fault I just feel really sad that I let this happen to her.

A few nights ago I brought Bella and Jess home from school for break. I had them in a pen in my room behind a pet gate. My dog was so curious... she sat watching them for many many hours just watching quitely. My mom and I joked that she was watching Guinea Pig TV she was so entranced by them. Bell even came right up to te pet gate and sniffed at my dog. Then ran away freaked out like... Oh my... a dog! My was just laying down with her nose pressed to the gate quietly the whole time and did not move a muscle.
Even at night my dog sleeps in my room and can roam the house free as she pleases. I figured she was fine with the piggies. And for a few nights this break and a few nights last time I was home (a few weeks ago when I got them) she is fine... just a little excited when they squeal.

So anyways. Today I forgot to close my door when I went to brush my teeth. Right after I am done I remembered and went to close it because we have 2 cats who I know can jump the gate. (They dont even know about the piggies yet or have shown no interest but I figure safer is better) so i go to my room and my dog is in the GP pen! I dont know how she got in there she is only 15 pounds I doublt she can jump over. But. Oh My Gosh she is in there and I yell at her to get out and she does and then there is blood all over and I see Jess laying on her side and she is gasping for air. and I feel SO guilty because it is my fault. By the time we drive her to our vet (about 10-15 min) Jess is gone...

I just had the vet take care of her body. Seeing her blood all around makes my stomach drop. We had Bella checked out and she seems to be doing okie. She wasn't eating at first but now she is eating and drinking well.

I hope she is okie because now she does not have a buddy to cuddle with. She and Jess would always cram themselves into whatever corner they could. Always together.

Anyways. Thanks for reading this.

Oh and yes. Now I am much more careful with my dog. She is not allowed in my room if the GP anywhere where she can get them. Tomorrow night I may allow her to sleep in my room again. But I will put Bella in another room or on the floor of my closet with the door closed. (I have a walk in)

Re: Jess is gone

Luvgiraffes, I had just about the same thing happen. I knew very little of GP's at the time. I had 3 guys who I kept in plastic bins, in my bathroom. I kept the doors closed when they had free time in the bathroom. My dogs could have cared less. Someone dropped a stray huskey/wolf mix near our house. I took him in. He had been living off the ground squirrels that squeeked in the desert. I went to feed veggies and the GP's started weeking, then silence. The dog jumped on the bathroom and went in and killed 2 of them before we could even get in there. I had just found this website and hadn't made a c & c cage yet. I then made the cage and made sure it had a lid. I at one time left my lid on my rabbit cage open. I thought I had closed it. I lost the rabbit to a dog.
Rabbits and GP's are natural prey for dogs, coyotes, wolves. Never can they be left alone in the presence of a dog .We all learn from our mistakes, even if they are very painful ones. I am very sorry for your loss. I know how bad it hurts. I know the guilt because I have been there. Mourn your little one. Your little one knows you did not do it on purpose.
Now you build a c&c cage with lids. Bella will eventually need a new friend.
When it happened to me, Legelas just cried and cried for his buddies. I had my daughter go get one from the petstore (like I said, knw nothing about nothiing at this time) He was so happy to have a friend. When the time is right you will get Bella a friend. Suzi

I am so sorry.
That must have been very hard to see.
But remeber, we all make mistakes, some worse than others.

Re: Jess is gone

Thanks so much for you story suzi. And for your post auburnmare. It made me feel a lot better to know that I am not alone in my experience. I know that it has not been very long but I can honestly say that I've learned my lesson. I am very careful to make sure my door is closed and that my dog or cats are no where near my piggies.

I actually decided that I wanted to find Bella friend as soon as possible since she was used to being around her sister... and I figured that it would be a good way for me to move on. To give a piggie in need a home. My mom and I went to our animal shelter and picked out a semi baby. She is a lot smaller than Bella but not tiny... I'm not sure how old but Bella is 6-8 months and I'm thinking younger. She is a really pretty tri color smooth hair. She is really really shy and runs away whenever I get close so I'm learning to be very patient and just watch her. I've named her Zoe. I might post an add on intro to my other post.

Re: Jess is gone

I am so glad to hear you have gotten a friend for Bella. When my guys died I got a baby boar for Legelas. I didn't know about quarintine at the time and put him right in withe Legelas. It was love at first site. Legelas was so happy. They were a wonderful pair until I lost my beloved Legelas. A note. Please quarintine your new little Zoe. Peppi, who came from the petstore, at that time, gave Legelas lice and I had to treat them both.
I am so glad you adopted Zoe. She sounds so cute. Love to see pictures.

Re: Jess is gone

I am so sorry! That is such a sad story! I am glad that Bella is okay!
I will keep you and your piggies in my thoughts and prayers!
Remember it is not your fault, accidents happen! But, it is not your dogs fault either! Dogs are dogs, that is what they do! Don't be mad at your dog! Chances are your dog was just trying to play and didn't realize how rough it was being!

Re: Jess is gone

Thanks so much!
Yes. Little Zoe is in her quarantine stage. She still has almost 2 weeks! I did kinda fudge the quarantine a tiny bit when I got her though... I wanted to make sure that they would be okie since I dont have room for 2 appropriate cages so I let them sniff each other at the shelter and they seemed to be okie. But now they are back in quarantine and I think that Bella can't wait to see her friend again. I hear her talking to her sometimes when I come into my room. It is so cute.
I did post a link to a picture. Well I tried to post the picture but I'm not sure why it didn't work.
Here is the link. It is off my phone but looks pretty good I think.

and Newpiggiemom. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. I still absolutely love my doggie she is my baby. I know that she was just trying to play with them. She gets excited when the atmosphere is high energy. So i'm figuring that when they started squealing fom fear she got even more excited and wanted to play and then just wasn't gentle enough. Now she gets to watch them from behind the pet gate which I think that she still enjoys doing. When I have time I will post some more pictures of Jess and Bella and baby Zoe and guinea pig tv
