Unhappy R.I.P Splash

I have had something unfortunate happen to me today (please bear with me)-
Splash, My four-year-old goldfish passed away, of most likely a swim bladder problem.
He had been a bit ill for the past week-I came home one day to find him barely breathing and lying on his side. He perked up again after about an hour of this.
I went on holiday for a day and a half (they had slow release vacation food in case you were wondering...) and came back to find him curled up, under a tank plant. He was not able to swim, and had a strange black lump on his side. He just bobbed around on the current, and at that point I realised he was not going to make it. It was a miracle he even made it through the night.
He passed away today (26th October 2007, 1:45pm).
Rest in peace splash... you were great.

Aww - sorry to hear about your sweet Splash. I have goldfish too and know that strange as it sounds to some people - they are real pets too!

Re: R.I.P Splash

I am sorry for your loss. After having any pet for four years and then losing it is so hard, I know some people think it's just a fish, but they have personalities too.

Re: R.I.P Splash

Thanks for all the support. I am getting a new fish today, which should help splash's friend shiny, who also doesn't look too healthy, either...

Re: R.I.P Splash

So sorry to hear about Splash. I understand how much he will be missed.

I know that fish are not so easy to rescue, however, many of the same things apply to new fish as with guineas. If Shiny isn't looking so great, perhaps he has the same problem as Splash? It would be best policy to keep your new fish in a quarintine tank, to protect both for a spell, before putting them both in together. I'm not sure of the best way to disinfect a tank, but perhaps this would be advisable too. Maybe someone will let you know the best way to go about this (though I imagine whatever, it'll involve plenty of rinses!)

I really hope that Shiny is OK, maybe he is missing his friend? Good luck with your new fish, and let us know how you get on (pictures are also most welcome!)

Re: R.I.P Splash

I am so sorry. I have shed quite a few tears over fish. People think you don't bond with them, but they must never have had fish. RIP Splash!!!!!
