My brother found him dead in his cage just a few minutes ago. I don't know what happened. He was fine earlier when I restocked his hay and gave him some more pellets and he even ate some lettuce and some other veggies. I am so damned devastated. He was only 1 year and 2 1/2 months old. He's also the first of my pigs to die. I am sitting her bawling like a baby and wondering if there was something in his behavior I've missed. |

I keep feeling like it's my fault although I know it isn't. He wasn't ill, showed no signs of illness. He ran around all over the living room late last night when I got home from bingo then ate a big plate of veggies. He wouldn't leave his fleece layed down, so I changed him to shavings a couple days ago. Maybe it was something in this bag of shavings? I don't have the money to do a necropsy or a way to get him to Jacksonville to have it done so I won't know. My bro took him home to dad's to be buried and I called dad and even dad was choked up. I still can't stop crying. |

This sucks, Ly. I'm so sorry - losing pets is so, so hard. I know you gave Wheeky a fabulous life, though, and that he was happier with you and your family than he could have ever been with anyone else. |

Words are completely escaping me. Remember that you were the best Mom that Wheeky could have ever asked for just like you are to all of your little ones. Please don't beat yourself up and know we're here for you. Love and hugs to you. |

QHB, I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand completely what you are going through. It was devastating when I lost Mama so quickly. She was fine on Saturday morning, but by that evening she was showing a running nose and by Sunday morning, she was gone. I know how much you loved him and you know that you are the best mommy. It was just his time to go. Hang in there. It does get easier. Love ya, PHB |

Ly I am so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose our furry friends, it truly is the worst part of having a pet. I know you will always remember him and keep him in your heart. Your other pigs will help comfort you in this difficult time. Be strong, he would not want you to second guess anything or be upset over his loss. My thoughts are with you. Rest in peace "wheeky boy", you will be missed, but never forgotten. |

I'm so sorry Ly. I haven't lost any of my beloved pigs so I can't say I know just how you feel, but do know that I understand it is so tough to lose an animal you love so much. It's even harder when they go so quickly, and whe you don't know why...well, it's got to be unbearable. Please just remember you have been an amazing piggie mom to Wheeky, and you are an amazing piggie mom to all your other pigsters, so don't be hard on yourself. You know in your heart you would have done something had you seen it coming; there's nothing you could have done. It was just Wheeky's time. Thinking of you. Big hugs. xx |

I'm so sorry Ly. Wheeky lived a fantastic life with you, and he loves you for it. I can't even imagine what losing one of my girls would be like. Big hugs from me and the girls! Take care. |

I'm gonna give a little background info on Wheeky so you all know the story. His mother is my American satin sow Harlequin Chatterbox aka Chatty. His father was a Teddy boar named Bubba who was later adopted out to a forum member. I had taken Bubba in around early March of last year. Well when he first came here I was really busy at the time and was gone from home a lot in the evenings. Well my son and his friend decided one night while I was gone that it would be fun to put Bubba into the girls cage containing 4 sows to watch him "get it on" with the girls. This was done unbeknownst to me. I had no idea my Chatty was pregnant but on May 14, 2005 she delivered 3 beautiful, healthy pups. 2 baby boars and a baby sow. Fudge Brownie who was later renamed to Mr. Wheeky was one of the brothers, Patches McGhee aka Patchy was the other brother and Baby Elly Lil' Ly MEGABEAST aka Meg or Lil' Ly was the sister. My mom fell in love with him and wanted him so I said ok but I tried so very hard to get her to take Patchy too so Wheeky wouldn't be lonely. She said she wanted to see if she could handle taking care of one due to her health problems before she could decide if she could take care of two. She ended up only being able to care for Wheeky so later Patchy was rehomed with Angelwise from this forum. Wheeky went to live with my mom at the age of 3 weeks. I gave my parents a 2x3 C&C, some Cavy Performance and some hay for him. Later on though I found out mom had bought him some pellet mix crap when the performance ran out and we kind of fought about it so I fixed the problem by supplying all his pellets after that. Mom was great when it came to veggies, he sure had more than a cup of veggies daily. I had also started supplying all his hay. Around March of this year, mom had decided that she was getting to a point where she couldn't really take care of him as well anymore and she asked me if I could find a good home for him. I was also looking for a home for two foster sows I took in and along came a great home. It was with shorty99_02 who is a forum member here. Shorty's sister adopted Wheeky and Shorty adopted Finna and Oats in early April this year. Well as life would have it, Shorty's sisters husband became really ill and Shorty's sister could no longer care for Wheeky and her ailing husband so Shorty took him into her home. I can say that Shorty was a great slave and piggie mom to these pigs but circumstances beyond her control (and I am not going to go into details) forced her to have to bring the 3 pigs back to me. Wheeky, Finna and Oats just came back on July 23 or about a week and a half ago. I was excited to have them all back, especially Wheeky who was my mom's baby and having lost my mom in May, well to me it was like having a part of her back again. Now Wheeky is once again with his human mommy who loved him so very much. He was born here in my home and passed away here in my home but somehow I think my mom wanted her Wheeky boy back and decided she needed him more than I did. I love you Wheeky boy and I will miss you terribly. Ok, now I have to stop rambling on because I'm crying again, not only for Wheeky but for my mom too. Fudge Brownie aka Mr. Wheeky May 14, 2005- August 1, 2006 |

I'm so sorry Ly. You did everything you could, sometimes it just comes on too suddenly to notice until it's too late. He knows you love him, and he's with your mom again. Big hugs! |

Ly, I'm so sorry. It's terribly hard to lose a pet; I think we put so much of ourselves into loving and caring for them. A good friend of mine put such a sweet sentiment into a sympathy card; something about how they always leave us with a hole in our hearts shaped just like them. Sending lots of hugs... Very sorry to read of your loss, its a terrible shock when that happens. It clearly is not your fault but remember piggies are VERY good at hiding anything wrong with them and can go downhill very quick so I do not think you could have done anything. Don't blame yourself please. One idea I had when reading the background, his mom is a satin? I have heard satins have a reduced lifespan but I do not know if this just applies when they have a single satin gene and how much this affects? just an idea, I don't know much about cavy genetics though. |
