re: Trixie's medical thread
She's got daindruffy white above her eye too, I wonder if it may be fungus? I'd take her to the vet when you can before it gets infected by scratching and ask what it may be. Don't let them do a skin scraping though, as it will be very painful so near the eye... Have a look on guinealinx for fungus too.

The vet gave me anti fungal meds. He didn't scrap, thank goodness... the meds were for possible mites and possible fungus.

Blood and I freaked
Ok, Trixie's been dealing with mites and that is getting better. This morning after doctoring her eye, I put her back in the cage and saw blood on the blankie I used to hold her. I'm thinking NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH HER! She bleeding out the behind. I'm thinking the worst. Norm thinks she having a period. I go to the vet and yep, she's in heat and bleeding. I got tickled, the vet got tickled. Just call me the scared mama. We go to the desk and the young boy asks the vet, how do I write it up? I look at them and say Guinea Pig OBGYN exam? LOL Vet laughed and said, yeah. Only charged me $10 for the "exam" instead of his typical $30. I come home and Norm was laughing. Our little Trixie is now a "teenager" lol. Glad I have red fleece in the cage and don't have to go buy little piggie mini-pads or tampons. ;)
Thought y'all might like a little laugh. Call me a worry-wort. I told the vet, "I'm new at this. I'm learning!" :D
Have a great day!

Re: Blood and I freaked
Sows DO NOT bleed when they are in heat. It is not normal AT ALL. I just went through this with my sow and she ended up getting spayed due to ovarian cysts.
You need to find a cavy savvy vet because this one doesn't seem to have a clue about guinea pigs.

Re: Blood and I freaked
It could be stones, a UTI or a reproductive tract problem.

Hmmm... ok. I know she isn't a dog, but our dog did a tad when she went into heat. Hmm...
OK. Thank you for the info!

Re: Blood and I freaked
It's not normal for a guinea pig to spot during estrus. Sometimes you may see the mucus plug, but you shouldn't see blood. My girl Penny was spotting during her heat cycles. Since it shouldn't happen I knew something was wrong with her reproductive system. I thought it was uterine cancer since all her tests were coming out clear of any issues. I decided to do an exploratory spay and sure enough she had ovarian cysts.
Many people think that it's normal for all animals to spot during their reproductive cycle, but that's not the case.

Here's Penny's med thread, at the beginning it shows pictures of her spotting

Re: Blood and I freaked
You need a new vet. It is NOT normal for guinea pigs to spot when they're in heat. Spotting is most likely the sign of a hormonal problem, and it's entirely possible that your pig will need to be spayed.

Re: Blood and I freaked
Found a new vet... cavy savvy. I called around to different places that happened to be open past noon on Sat. and one led me to the "guinea pig guru". He gave me Sulfamethoxazole & Trimethoprim and probiotic. She goes back on the 18th for a recheck. He's had piggies before of his own.
Hopefully all will go well after this trip.

Great job getting that piggy back in @LoriBush , and fantastic at getting the info to her @ellisa - along with what to watch out for. This is why these forums are so awesome.
Good luck with Trixie, tell her to get better soon!

Re: Blood and I freaked
That's good news on the new vet. Are you sure the blood isn't in the urine? It doesn't sound like it but if you aren't certain and it's still an issue at the time of the follow up visit, you might want to have the vet do a urinalysis to see if it's a UTI or (I hope not) a stone/sludge issue.

Re: Blood and I freaked
@Paula
I don't think it is her urine because she did pee on the blanket and left a yellow spot. I really hope the meds clear whatever it is up. :/
