Anal Sacs And Age
Well, I took the plunge to clean the boys anal sacs today. I only have done Gandalf as his looked worse. But, it wasn't THAT bad. He had a lot of hay and stuff in there. He kept pooping as I was doing it though. haha But, How often do I do it? Is it just a as needed thing?
And I am assuming he is older as he is more relaxed and such, is there a way to tell how old a pig is? Cause I know with Dogs, you check there teeth. But, with Guineas I have no idea.
Frodo I was told is just about a yr old, and his Anal sac doesn't look as bad as Gandalfs was. Does he need it too?
I am SO New to males pigs so I am trying to make sure I do it right!
Thanks in advanced!

I read somewhere that you can tell by their feet. That could be totally wrong because I can't find where I read it.

Re: Anal Sacs And Age
There's no way to tell how old a pig is after they're adults, and it's only a guess before then.
Individual pigs vary with how often their sacs need to be cleaned. If there's a lot of hay in the bottom of the cage, more cleaning is required. If not, you can probably go longer. I'd start out with a weekly check, and cleanings as needed. But if you find a lot of gunk after one week, then do it more often.
Also, don't forget to check the sheath of the penis as well -- that can get pretty yucky also.

Re: Anal Sacs And Age
I wish there was a way to tell. I dread the day I loose Gandalf. And I just wish I knew how old he was. :(
Yes, I did a good cleaning of the Penis and his Sacs. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
But I sweep the cage out 2x a day. And make sure I sweep up as much of the hay as I can. But on the fleece it is tough to get it all up!
Thanks for the help!
