Hey, everyone,
My pig was just brought home yesterday (yes, she's from Petco and I know it would've been better to adopt but this wasn't possible where I'm living--please understand that I usually do adopt pets).
She's currently living in a converted dog crate (35.5"x22"x24" with Paper Pulp and Hay Bedding--Looking to add a second level and switch to fleece/litter boxes). Immediately when I brought her home and opened up the litter I bought from the store (paper pulp which seems to be the same litter used there), MY allergies started going haywire with coughing and a tight throat. I suspect there was dust in the bedding or that it wasn't properly processed (never buying the same brand again--never had this problem with Carefresh with my mouse).
Anyhow, my GP immediately started sneezing and has continued yesterday and today. Her eyes are bright, clear, and clean and her nose isn't runny. She's been doing laps around her cage like a happy piggie, so much so that I've temporarily put up some balsa wood around the outside of the cage to keep the litter in (until I can get to Home Depot tomorrow for some Coroplast, which Hobby Lobby didn't carry and I couldn't find at Lowes online.) She was sneezing long before the balsa wood came into the picture, and I really think it's either the hay or the litter.
I've bought some aspen wood shavings to change out half the litter today and half tomorrow (the cost of wasting all those paper pulp pieces makes me SICK but what can you do?). She has the 15-day period of vet assistance from the store, but I'd rather not stress her out more and take her to the vet unless it's absolutely necessary. She's just settling in from her trip home and is still skittish.
I'm looking to start using fleece, because that's the only real long-term solution I can see. Has anyone else had a problem with sneezing due to paper pulp litter? Do you think she needs to see a vet this week? Would you use the aspen chips in a litter box once I switch to fleece?
She's been nearly completely silent since I brought her home--the whole ride home, only wheeked once when I picked her up. She bubbled very slightly earlier after I was petting her. Her teeth have been "chewing" a little (not gnashing or clattering), but not really making any squeals or squeaks. It was super hot in the store and she was lying on her side and belly sleeping (all the critters in the store were doing that, poor dears! The heat index yesterday was 100 here!). My house is very well air-conditioned, so she's not having heat issues right now. It's about 70-72 F in here.
Like I said, though, she's been doing laps around the cage periodically and even a few popcorns! She really likes the space. She's been eating fresh fruits, veggies, and her pellets, lots of hay, and drinking water. She eschews the orange bits in favor of apple slices, and she's been getting lots of Romaine lettuce and a few red bell pepper pieces and a few carrots (not a huge fan of these).
Does this sound like a sick pig, or a dusty pig? My allergies are settling down a little now that the hay and litter have settled, so I wonder if maybe hers will, too? Especially if I switch to the aspen and then, in a couple days, the fleece?
Thanks!
