I'd do a nizoral bath, and then apply monistat very sparingly -- you don't want her licking it off. Repeat the monistat a couple of times a day, and the bath in about three or four days.
Just for the record, not all fungi will fluoresce under a black light -- some do, some don't.
Ditto those who said to be careful with it. Throw away any wooden things in your cage, and change the bedding daily for a few days. Use gloves when handling her and when putting the medication on.
Thank you all. Today just got more stressful. One of the piggies I was going to get tomorrow died this morning and she is worried about the others now, so I can't get them. Back to square one on the piggies.
You can buy the nizoral and monistat at the grocery store, usually.
Someone mentioned using lavender oil and something else--I would caution against using any type of essential oil.
She still has it. It seems to be better, but still treating her. She wants me to cuddle her and wheeks loudly when I start to walk away. :( I can't wait for this to heal up.
Not getting better. Now her skin is getting red. I think she is getting worse and she is just hiding her discomfort. She eats like crazy though and is gaining at least 10g a day, sometimes more. She is starting to really act uncomfortable. I still can't take her to the vet because the cavy savvy vet is still on Holiday. :( I have looked into gorgeous guineas products and emailed asking which would be best for her situation. :( I just want her to be better. :( She is such a sweet and cuddly piggie and really needs to be held daily. She loves floor time and getting love. :(
Anyone have tips?
What has been done so far? Can you recap so I won't need to re-read everything?
I have been using antifungal Cream suggested on one of the sites given, and the nizoral bath. :( I am looking into gorgeous guineas super soufle cream as well as a few others suggested. :( I am afraid the bath may have irritated her skin so I am not going to do that anymore and see if the redness goes away. Putting aloe on the red spots to help soothe the skin. :( I just feel so bad for her. :(
My husband is going to get extra fleece tomorrow so I can switch her bedding out every day instead of as it needs it. I have removed her chew sticks since they are wood, but she gets unlimited greens and hay, and her daily pellets. She is not losing weight, so that is a relieving sign, but I still worry. Its not spreading as far as her losing hair or patches, BUT her skin is red in the surrounding area.
I just hate going to sleep knowing she is probably very uncomfortable. :( I wish I could fix it immediately. I just hate that I some how missed this. It literally seems like it popped up overnight since I check her daily and she gets cuddles and floor time. I always wash my hands before and after petting her because I don't want to risk having something on my hands that could harm her. I change her bedding and clean out poop and wet spots several times a day because I wouldn't want to be in that, so I know she doesn't. People who come over are shocked they do not smell the pigs because I keep the cages so clean. :( I just feel terrible. I know she is uncomfortable and it bothers me because I am doing all I can to help, but it's not working. :(
Wanted to point out we have been using carefresh in her cage and it IS getting cleaned out daily. My husband is getting her fleece tomorrow so I can do that instead. The comment about spot cleaning is not referring to her current bedding, just meaning when we switch to fleece I want to have enough to change it daily, not just as needed. Didn't want anyone to think we are neglecting her bedding. Believe me, it gets changed out daily. The carefresh is running over $30 a week for one smaller cage, forget how much it has been costing for the 2x5. (Its $4 a bag here.)
We were holding out on getting fleece until after the holidays because its much cheaper then, plus, people are insane here around the holidays, so we tend to avoid shopping as much as we can.
Again, I realized that might be taken as "We only spot clean her cage." It gets cleaned and anything that comes in contact with her gets sterilized. I want her to get well asap, so I am doing everything I can here. :(
I just wanted you to know that I am here, read your thread, and am praying for your poor little sweetheart !! If I think of anything that might help, I will be back.....so sorry you are going through this with your darling piggie during Christmas, how awful ! Ugh. I really feel for you both ! You both will definitely be in my thoughts, for the rest of the night, my friend.
Thank you. I feel so helpless and I don't like that feeling. I've been up and down, mostly up, all night checking on her. She plays and eats like it doesn't bother her, but I can look at her little face and tell she doesn't feel well. She tenses up when I have to check her. Breaks my heart. I try to be as gentle as possible and move slowly so not to startle her. She will turn her head like she wants to bite me, but then she pauses and just nuzzles under my hand. Told my husband it makes me want to cry. She seems to understand that I am not trying to hurt her, just trying to help. I really wish I could have the gorgeous guinea stuff overnighted to my house.
I know my posts are rambling, this is just stressful. :( Sorry if all of my posts are all over, I just feel awful. I was hoping to see some improvement. :(
To me, it looks the the beginning of mange mites. I say this because one of my girls, Natalie, was just diagnosed with a severe case of mange mites and this is what she looked like when we first started to notice a problem. The severity increased rapidly and we had issues getting her to the vet due to the holidays. Tonight, we were able to receive three doses of ivermectin and some electrolytes, so she will be much better soon.
Good luck, darling!
Are you sure this is not just the healthy pink skin which is revealed when the black crust comes off? That's what happened with my piggy: black crust comes off revealing healthy skin underneath which you see for a while till the fur grows back.
I'm not sure. The crusts haven't really come off that I can tell. This is red, not pink. :( This looks like inflammation. Plus there is fur on top of the red, its just irritated I guess. :( I guess I have to try invermectin if this doesn't get better. :( I wish I could take her to her vet. :( Thank you so much. I would be very happy if it was new skin.
Thank you. Poor thing. I hope your little girl gets well soon. :( Tiger Lily's haven't gotten worse as far as losing fur or it spreading, but her skin does look irritated surrounding the area, but maybe janinehunt is right and its healing and it's new skin? I feel so helpless because I can't take her to the vet because of the holidays. I could take her to the ER vet, but they don't take care of "pocket pets" and I would be afraid they would do more damage than good. :(
Wanted to update. Tiger Lily is FINALLY getting hair back on her side. The weird skin patch has healed up. I had tried everything suggested, but the only thing that seemed to work was neosporin. She is acting normal, and eating well like always. Finally hit the 1lb mark. She has been so tiny and I never thought she would catch up, but she has and loves running around. Still waiting to introduce her to the other pigs. Want to make sure she is completely well before I let them meet. Hoping all that happens soon because I can't wait to have my girlies together. :D Just thought I would update.

thanks for the update. If neosporin helpped, it may have been a scab from a physical injury of some kind.
I'm gald she's healing up. If you can you might want to take eveyone to the vet for a final check up before doing intros. Just to be safe.
