Popcorn was a new addition as of November 1st. I noticed on her foot about five days ago that there was a dry patch of skin on her right back foot. It goes all up her foot. There is hardly any fur. She is young, I'm not sure how old. She weighs 427 grams as of today, just to give you an idea of how small she is. She has been eating and drinking just fine. What do you think it could be? I was thinking it may be mange mites. :( Pookie, my other guinea, has no signs of these symptoms. Here is a picture of what it looks like: |

It's possible it could be mites. You might want to treat both pigs just in case. It could also be a fungal infection-- http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html |

It might be a fungal infection like ringworm. |

I'm only going to reiterate what the others have suggested...definately a vet visit is warranted. It's always best to go with your gut instincts. good Luck |

Okay so I just took her to the vet and it's not mites, or ringworm. She said the other possible thing was scurvy. So I am now giving her 50 mg of vit. C tablets daily. Thanks for the replies. |

It looks more like fungus. Are you feeding quality pellets and veggies daily? I doubt it is scurvy if you are feeding a proper diet. Most non cavy savy vets will jump to scurvy if they don't know what is going on. |

Are you sure your vet is cavy savy? |

Well I am feeding oxbow hay and pellets. And veggies consisting of green bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, romaine lettuce, and raddichio(sp?), and occationally carrot and zucchini. She is a cavy vet. We put the ultra violet light on her foot looking for a fungus and a fungus would have glown green. There was no green. They tested for mites too but the test was negative. |

Not all types of fungus show up under the black light. The test for mites is inconclusive. |

Okay I will do that. Might I add, that she doesn't scratch or bite at her foot. |
