Underweight guinea pigs?

I bought a kitchen scales today and weighed my two guinea pigs:
Milly : 430 grams
Molly: 330 grams
I was looking on Guinea Lynx and it says that the average weight of a guinea pig is 700-900 grams. Both of my pigs are under one year. They are the same age. Are they under weight?

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

What's their exact age?

Do they feel bony?

Pigs are like people--some are big, some small. It's possible yours are runts, or will just be small. Knowing their exact age will help.

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

No they don't feel boney at all. I thought they were overweight!
They are 4 months and 1 day! I only counted that up now. I thought they were much older!
Is their weight ok for 4 months?

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

Theres no set weight for pigs. As long as you keep an eye on the weight . Weigh them every week. For me princess has always been a few 100g under poppy. She pretty small. Tomorrow is the weighing day so i'll message you and you can compare. My girls are sisters.

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

My pigs are sisters aswell !
I think anyway because I got them off a breeder when I didn't know better ( I know
:( ) She said they were 7 weeks but to me they looked big for 7 weeks. My mam and dad said that they have got so much bigger but I didn't notice. I never weighed them before today ( I know! :( )

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

Oh I would wait until they're older to worry about their weight.

My boys have recently stopped gaining at about 6 months and are 2 lbs and 2 lbs 4 oz respectively but it took a fair while for them to get there.

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

As long as they are gaining weight and you feed them a proper diet (unlimited quality hay, quality pellets, fresh veggies twice daily), it doesn't matter exactly how much they weigh. They are still very young.

Re: Underweight guinea pigs?

I checked this chart from Guinea Lynx. Your pigs do weigh less than the ones in this chart, but if they are healthy and eating normally they're probably just small pigs.

They should keep gaining until they are a bit older than 6 months, and maybe later, then their weights will plateau. If they aren't gaining, then you may want to take them to the vet for a check up, or evaluate your feeding program.
