Is it possible for a pig to have some sort of nasal obstruction or deviated septum? Or maybe asthma? |

If there's weezing or conjestion it's more likely to be a URI but it is possible for rodents to have congenital defects of the sinus or lungs. Do you have some one weezy? |

It is possible for them to have asthma. In any case if there is wheezing or noisey breathing the piggie needs to see a vet. It would more likely be a URI. |

He did have a URI about 2 1/2 months back and has since been back to the vet and she gave him a clean bill of health. The reason I ask is because when Fitzroy gets excited or runs around real fast he gets a little wheezy or like he is out of breath a little. But you can only hear the wheezing noise is only if you have your ear by his nose. And even then, it's more of a small whistle than a wheeze. I listened to his lungs with a stethoscope and they sounded perfectly fine. Also, there is no accompanying nasal discharge and the eyes are clear. |

I would suggest a vet visit, if he does in fact have asthma they can prescribe albuterol, which would help. The anti-biotics for that URI may not have gotten rid of all the bacteria and he now has another URI. I know how traumatic a vet visit can be because it's such pain for you to get there. I really think that a vet visit would be smart, as respiratory symptoms can be dangerous, especially when you say that he is a little out of breath. Ultimately it can be a URI to anything Cardiac, which can be treated. |

Nope...no weight loss. He actually gained an ounce since last Sunday. I was wondering about the heart thing. His heart sounds fine via stethoscope, but of course what I hear and the vet hears could be two different things. I will call the vet and set an appointment. Better to be safe than sorry! LOL...did you remember my story about getting to the vet the last time? |

Yes I remember your story. Being a California girl I was mortified. Hope it goes better this time and good luck at the vet? |

LOL! Or hopefully no one who is using a tube sock as a sweat band while wearing ladies giant bug-eye looking sunglasses and butt-hugger shorts harasses him either. Ugh...New York is the worst! I hope I get back to California one day!!! |

Too funny!!! Wait until Xmas, it's beautiful at the park. Go ice skating at the park in the winter too! It's way better than an Ice Rink haha. |

MissFormosa, I have a pigg with "asthma" or reactive airway disease, as the lab vets like to call it. He is on an albuterol inhaler daily. I use a spacer that I ordered from AeroKat in Canada and a regular human inhaler. His wheezing comes from the lungs, though, and his sides heave when he's having problems. I thought I was the only one that used a stethoscope on my piggs. LOL |

I wish I could have been there for the "Shake Out" earthquake drill! I would have LOVED to use the magic of the internet to organize a group of people to parade around a little while after the drill as zombies...maybe right around Downtown L.A. or down Hollywood Blvd. or something!!! Hee! Quote:
I'm anxious to find out what the vet says it is! Oooooh no! I don't do winter! It gets way to cold here and I have to wear clonky boots and all these layers of clothes! I remember living back in CA and only having a polarfleece hoodie! Last edited by Ly&Pigs; 10-17-09 at 10:39 pm. |

I love California for that. As for trading places, absolutely not! I wouldn't want to be in NYC or anywhere it snows for that matter. |

Peg, my stetho is a Sprague Rappaport with changeable bells and diaphragms for both children and adults. It's an Omron and I got it on Amazon for about $15. It works well enough to use to check their lungs. You could try an adult one on a piggy to see how well you can hear. |
