Ring Worm can't get rid of it

I had a young sow come in with a bad case of ring worm. She was treated and its now gone, a month and a half after hers has cleared a group of 5 have it.
I disinfect their brushes and cages etc with hibiscrub. Wash the infected area with hibiscrub and apply Miconazole Nitrate 2% twice daily. They are quarantined from the others and I wear gloves when handling them. But I just cant get it to go. Its clears up on one pig then another gets it, and they haven’t even been in contact. I don’t know what else to do I disinfectant everything. Any ideas this has been going on since June!
The vet was rubbish just said all I can do is wash them, got the rest of the information from the cavy trust, as there isn’t a good vet within miles of here.

Re: Ring Worm can't get rid of it

Did your vet tell you what to wash them in? Has he or anyone else suggested Sporal-D pet anti-fungal shampoo?

Animal shampoo from MEDICHEM International

Don't be misled by the 'clinical disinfectant' - it smells very pleasant and is nice to use !

I haven't specifically used it for ringworm but have used it several times in case of suspect fungal infections i.e. generalised scurfy/ itchy coats. The skin irritaion cleared up very quickly.

Re: Ring Worm can't get rid of it

What about the space that they have floor time in? Is it possible they're reinfecting eachother in this space? Do you disinfect between each pig's time there?

Are you using a different set of gloves to handle each one? Could be spreading through the gloves.

Re: Ring Worm can't get rid of it

I don't know if this helps of not, but I thought I would tell you about my experance with ring worm in my family.

We picked up a stray cat and of course it had ring worm. The cat gave it to the dog, who got it horriblly, and ended up getting staf infection from the ring worm. Well the dog gave it to myself and my children. So after dr and vet visits, we had anti-fugal meds. The vet also gave us an iodine shampoo for the cat and dog, and the dr told us to was our heads with selsem blue shampoo. I was very dilagent on baths for everyone and meds on every ring worm patch. Used gloves, washed hands, washed bedding, etc.
It took 3 mths for it to finnally all go away!!!! 3 WHOLE MONTHS!! I thought it would never go away. The dr and the vet told me that ring worm was very hard to get rid of. But the dr also told me that there is new studies saying that once you get ring worm once, that it's harder for you to get it again becuase your body builds an imunity to the fungus.
Which I can see might be true beucause about a year after we first got ring worm a new cat we had, got ring worm. And no one in the house ever got it. (THANk Goodness)

So I would suggest just being patient, it's just might take a while.

Sadly this is not always true. I worked in a pet shop in my younger years and managed to get it 3 times between the ages of 12 and 15 from various animals that came through. :( I wouldn't rely on any immunity to stave off reinfection in the future.
