Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Yesterday morning I noticed one of my piggies was dragging her hind legs. I got a vet appt. within the hour. When I got there they stated she has a herniated disk. They put her on Dexamethasone .5 injections. They told me if she was not better by Friday to bring her in to have her laid to rest. That does not seem very long to see if she will recover does it? I have read some threads it has taken up to 3 months to fully recover from a herniated disk. I took her to the only vet here in town that handled "pocket pets" in which they said Cavies fall under. She is laying there sleeping, eating, drinking looking around. She does not have any shakes or make any noises when we pick her up & she crawls right up onto our shoulders like she always has. Any Suggestions or any experiances with the same situation? Thanks for any help I can get. |

First, the vet can't make you put her down. If you don't wana then don't! I would wait and see... give her time... please don't give up on her. :( |

I have been calling other vets. I found another who is willing to do X-Rays on her tomorrow. He is fitting her in. He does great with our pugs he is just further out and I honestly just remembered him. His comment waas when a person throws out his back do we throw in the towel? I was like exactly I think she needs more time so we are going to see what we can do. My husband will figure out her wheels when he gets off duty tomorrow. |

Oh, how sad! I agree he can't make you put her down. Do what you think is best for you and your pig. Good luck and good thoughts your way. |

If you do a forum search for "dragging back legs" you will pull up a few threads that may be helpful. For now in addition to the steroids keep her in a small area to keep her quiet. Keep her food and water near, of course. Weigh daily to be sure she is not loosing weight. Towels and fleece work well for bedding as the fleece helps to wick the moisture away. You will still need to change the bedding frequently and keep an eye out for urine scald. I am glad you are going to another vet. This is not necessarily a death sentence! |
