Is My Piggie Pregnant? I adopted a mother pig and two babies when the little ones were 3 days old. When my male was about 8 or 9 weeks old I removed him from the cage with Mom and sis because he and Mom were fighting. I had read online that males sexually mature rather early but when I called my vet they said there was no need to seperate them until the babies were 4 or 5 months old. So....I left them in the same C&C cage until mom and son could no longer get along. Now fast forward about 4 weeks and mother is looking very plump and feels very weighted on her back side. I've noticed she drinks TONS also. Is it possible she is pregnant?? I don't want babies but now I'm wondering if there were separated to late - ugghhh! How do you know if you have a pregnant female? Thanks, Michelle Last edited by Ly&Pigs : 11-01-08 at 02:03 am. Reason: removing email for safety reasons

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? It's very possible. Males can impregnate females as early as 3-4 weeks of age. Your vet doesn't sound all too cavy savvy.

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? Aside from weight gain and in my experience a greatly increased appetite you can detect pregnancy by about six weeks flickering movements can be felt inside mum and by eight weeks you can actually feel the bones of the babies and increased movement. Towards the end of the 10 week pregnancy if you run your finger down her spine towards the end you should be able to feel that her pelvis is parted. It is more than likely that she is pregnant if he was left with her that long

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? She is most likely pregnant. Males have to be removed at exactly 21 days or else they can get mom and sisters pregnant. I suggest you find another, more cavy savvy vet.

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? Well my vet told me the same exact thing. He even looked it up on the computer. Lucky I listened to people on the forums rather than my vet. I am still not 100% sure Tess isn't pregnant again. Probably just being paranoid, but the piggies have been seperated since Sept 2nd so if she is I will know soon enough. I need to find a better vet, but there are none nearby. And I know many travel hours to get to vets, but that is just not possible for me.

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? She is almost definantly preggo. The males should be seperated at 21 days of age. Your vet does not sound cavy savvy and I would stop using him.

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? Not sure if you were talking to me or the original poster, but I seperated our babies at 21 days as they said in the forums, so I think Tess should be fine.

Re: Is My Piggie Pregnant? Rabbitsncavyluv is probably right. You should mix some alfalfa hay in with there regular hay just in case they are.
