Question Horns on feet

When I took one of my babies to the vet for his check-up (he's fine), he had this little piece of what I thought was poo stuck on the bottom of his foot that I couldn't get off.I tried soaking it, didn't work and I was afraid I'd hurt him if I pulled it, so I asked him if there was some other way to get it off. When he looked at it, he grinned and said "It's not feces...he's got a little horn!" He went on to explain that they just happen sometimes, no big deal, and he said to just trim it when I trim his nails if it needs it. He's a very cavy savy vet (has 5 of his own)-an exotic specialist and he's pulled both of my guys through bad times, removed a tumor from one, so I trust him completely. It doesn't seem to bother my Sunshine in the least and when I trim it myself (he doesn't even flinch),it's real soft, but kind of brittle. When I cut some, some just breaks off itself. The vet said that it'll grow so slow that I'll probably only have to trim it 2x a year. I looked at all the pics and it's definitely not bumblefoot...the vet would have said so anyway. Anybody ever hear of anything like this? I did a search...nothing!

Re: Horns on feet

All of the guinea pigs I've cared for had them at least once in their life time, so I'm pretty sure it's not uncommon.
On GuineaLynx they're called 'spurs'. http://www.guinealynx.info/feet.html

Yes Re: Horns on feet

banjosnotbombs-Thanks! I feel alot better now! Even with the vet saying it, I like to hear it from this forum. Thanks for the link, too and telling me they're called spurs. The vet didn't tell me that so I couldn't look anything up! That picture is exactly what it looks like! Thanks again!
