Concerning Behavior

The past 2-3 days I've noticed my male, George, has not been acting quite like himself. He's eating just fine, but I'm noticing I'm not having to fill his water bottle every 1-2 days like I was before. He also seems a bit lethargic and occasionally goes into a "trance" where he just sits there and allows me to pet him. Normally, if I even put just one finger in his cage he runs away. I have noticed him rubbing his face/nose, but no sneezing or wheezing. His left eye is watering.

George is housed by himself, but I'm working on that along with switching him and my females to a C & C cage. The girls are fine ~ they're housed below George. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Re: Concerning Behavior

You should probably take him to a vet asap. I have no idea.

He sounds sick. They go downhill fast. They are prey animals and hide their symptoms, often until it is too late but if he is not acting normally, that is a sign that he is ill.

Are you weighing him weekly?

Re: Concerning Behavior

George has been doing much better the past few days. I believe he may have just been depressed. He was actually popcorning today, which he does not do very often, after I put some hay in his cage.

Some piggies can get depressed. Some can get depressed when they are put in a smaller cage, or a fellow buddy dies. But obciously, none of that has happened.

TEStrock25: Next time you notice anything wrong with your guiena pigs, get him to a vet. They go downhilll fast.

Re: Concerning Behavior

I agree that Guinea Pigs can display symptoms of depression especially after the loss of a cage mate
