Exclamation Blood in Urine

I had my piggies out for floor time yesterday and I noticed a pinkish spot on the towel I had them on...Ginger went exploring on the left side of the cage and when I was cleaning up I saw a small puddle of bloody urine. It must be hers because she was the only piggy over in that area. I am really worried, a couple of days ago I noticed she was laying down a lot (more than usual for this lazy piggy :]) but I didn't think much of it. I don't think my mom will be too convinced and will say I am over-reacting if I say we need to rush her to the vet immediately...any suggestions? I read up and it might be a urinary tract but I don't know what to do.

Re: Blood in Urine

Sorry to here about Ginger. You should get her to a cavy vet right away. She may have a urinary tract infection like you said, but only a vet can make the proper diagnosis.

Explain to your mom what's going on with Ginger, but whether she is convinced or not your piggie must see a vet!

Keep us posted.

Re: Blood in Urine

Hold Ginger in your lap on a white towel so that you can see the pee as soon as it comes out to get a better idea. Also listen for squeaking. If one or both of these are present she will need antibiotics for a urinary tract infection, or surgery for bladder stones. But it's more likely an infection.

PS- She really doesn't need to go to the vet "immediately". She can wait till Monday.

I think PiggieMamaKelly forgot that Monday is a holiday.
Call vets today, it might be easier to get your pig in.

Re: Blood in Urine

It may or may not be blood. Have you been feeding anything unusual to your pig the last few days? Sometimes odd colored urine spots aren't always blood.

The best thing to do is like what PMK said, put her on a white towel and observe her going and then observe the pee after she goes. Also observe if she's squeaking in pain.

Re: Blood in Urine

Sorry to hear about that, I hope she is okay.
My first thought is that is she maybe in heat or pregnant?
I hope you let us know how she does after she see's the vet, and my thoughts are with you and your piggie.

Re: Blood in Urine

If she is in heat, there's no reason for her to pass blood, as mentioned before. If she is pregnant and passing blood, is it definitely an emergency and she needs to see an e-vet right away!

Re: Blood in Urine

YEs thanks Jennicat, I was going to post my reasons as you did for asking if she was prego or in heat, becuase blood is a deffiante bad sign in either of those two cases.
I know the one rescue I did had a seperated Placenta, and was spotting and needed a C section emergency.
So If the piggy has those problems they need to see a vet right away. I always forget you only have 10 minutes to edit your post. So thanks for adding that.

Re: Blood in Urine

No she is not pregnant. Thanks all for the replies. I'm going to do the white towel thing and see how she does. I might as well do it for both pigs just to be safe...I did clean their cage yesterday and there were no blood spots only a few tan ones but I heard that is normal. I'll keep you posted on how she does :].
