Question Mites

I am baby sitting my friends guinea pig, but hers has mites. Sadly my Pumpkin and her guinea pig cannot play together but am wondering how careful I have to be. How far away do their cages have to be and if I let one play in one room can i put the other one in the same room later?

Re: Mites

You'd be better off keeping them in separate rooms. Your friends pig need treated for mites and if your pig has been anywhere close to the other pig then your pig will need treated as well. Mites, if left untreated, can end up killing the pigs.

Floortime needs to be done in separate rooms as well.

Re: Mites

You also need to wash your hands and change your clothes after you handle the pig with mites. If you don't, and you handle your pig, you can transfer the mites.

Don't allow your pig to have floortime where the one with mites did either.

Re: Mites

Pumpkin will be able to go into the living room a few days after the other pig has left.

The problem is though that this other pig really needs treated for mites and you bringing it into your home is opening up the potential to spread the mites from this pig to your pig. Make sure you take all the precautions. You said your friends pig is going to be treated for mites asap. How soon is that? Have treatments already started? The pig coming in needs 3 treatments of ivermectin spaced 7 days apart. How long will the pig be staying with you?

Re: Mites

Sprays don't work. She needs Ivomec.

Re: Mites

The spray could end up killing the pig depending on the ingredients. I wouldn't use it.

Re: Mites

Not all vets are cavy knowledgable. Many give antibiotics and other medications that can kill a pig.
