Swollen Toe

Peanut's one toe is swollen and red. It has been like this since Friday, but I didn't take him to the vet because I wasn't sure what it was. I can get some pics on Wednesday, but no sooner because my dad is on vacation in the Bahamas and brought the camera with him. Does anyone know what this might be? Should I take him to the vet?

Re: Swollen Toe

If you think your pig is hurt then yes, by all means take him to the vet. Wouldn't you want to see a doctor if your foot was hurting and swollen but you didn't the reason why? I think you know the answer to that question. As for foot problems here's a link with various things that could be wrong just so you have a reference to look. Please be smart and take your pigger to the vet like he deserves.

Re: Swollen Toe

Buttercups toe swelled up, her nail included and it eventually turned out that she had an infection that despite aggressive treatment went to the bone and she had the toe amputated. Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Advice needed for my girls

Re: Swollen Toe

Swelling indicates injury or infection. In either case, a trip to the doc seems to be in order.

Re: Swollen Toe

Ok, so it's 12:37 as I'm writing this, so my mom's asleep and I can't tell her that Peanut needs to go to the vet. I will tell her tomorrow morning. Pfl, did Buttercup let you touch her toe and not squeak while you did it? Was she limping? Because Peanut is isn't limping, and he lets me touch it like it isn't in pain at all.

Re: Swollen Toe

No she was not limping and her toe was not sore to touch.

I have no problem taking him to the vet. I was just wondering if it was something that I could fix without going to the vet.

Thumbs down Re: Swollen Toe

Here's some pix.

Just to let you know, that isn't my finger, it's my dad because he held Peanut for me:

Sorry they're so big, I didn't have time to resize them. :(

Re: Swollen Toe

Hmm..strange. Has he seen a vet yet? Buttercups WHOLE toe was swollen, nail included not just the tissue. It could be broken, or it could be an infection that has not spread yet. Or it could be something completely different. But regardless he needs to see a vet, probably some metacam for the inflammation and perhaps further diagnostics will be needed.

Re: Swollen Toe

It might be wise to hold off giving anything until it's checked by the vet. You wouldn't want to mask or decrease the severity of the symptoms. The vet needs to see all that he/she can.

Re: Swollen Toe

We were out yesterday, and by the time we got home, the vet was closed. Now we are waiting for the vet to open so we can make the appointment. Thanks for the info everyone!

Re: Swollen Toe

Has Peanut been checked by a vet yet? I hope so. Seven days is a long time to keep putting off treatment for something that could be very serious (as pigsforlife informed you 5 days ago).
