Re: Hair loss...big time Ok, so Flower might have ringworm AND definitely has a fungus. We are giving her a medicine every day for 21 days, orally. We also have a special soap for us when we handle her because ringworm can pass on to humans. Have any of you had ringworm with guinea pigs before? What did the vet do for you? I just want the best and I'm not sure if Flower is getting the right medication. Flower and her roommate Pumpkin are split up right now. They both seem rather lonely, do you have any toy ideas for them?? thanks

Re: Hair loss...big time What kind of medication is she on? Miconazole (Monistat) is ok for the fungus. According to GuineaLynx, oral kitten Program (from the vet only) is good for the ringworm. Be sure to wash thoroughly after handling them.

Re: Hair loss...big time Well...the medication on the bag/sticker says Griseofulvin 50mg/ml per ml....? On the tube with the medication it says BD Vacutainer Serum... I haven't heard of these, yet I haven't had a sick guinea pig before... We only got one medication, should I ask for that oral kitten program from the vet for the ringworm??

Re: Hair loss...big time The Griseofulvin is used to treat ringworm, but it's an older drug and can be harsher on a pig's system than Program (especially their livers and kidneys). I would try and get the Program if you can. You can actually get kitten Program online, at reputable sites such as Drsfostersmith.com Another helpful link on fungus: Guinea Lynx :: Fungus A ringworm thread from GL: Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Ringworm another thread this one with dosage information: Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Shelter pigs w/ringworm If you decide to stick with the Griseofulvin monitor the pig VERY closely for signs of intolerance, (lethargy, loss of appetite, etc) and discontinue immediately if it occurs.

Re: Hair loss...big time Many Thanks ellenvega!! On the Guinea Lynx forums that you showed me, they were talking about dosing the pigs every 2 weeks - about. My medication for Flower tells me to give her some every 24 hours for 21 days... Guinea Lynx also mentioned a higher fat diet. What should I feed her with higher fat??

Re: Hair loss...big time The 'high fat diet' is used with Program, to help with absorption. The GL recommendation is giving them 1cc of flaxseed oil when they receive their dose of Program. That should be sufficient. I don't think flaxseed oil would hurt either if you are still doing the griseofulvin.

Re: Hair loss...big time Ok, thank you. Today we were at the vet. The vet gave Flower her 2nd/last invectormin (sp) shot, as the vet thinks Flower has more than just ringworm. We're giving her a bath tomorrow and continue her prescription. Wish her the best!
