What's Even Worse Than Selling Easter Bunnies?

Putting the guinea pigs in with them!!!

Our favorite restaurant is near the store where I bought Mufasa so I stopped in to see if any of his pigmates were still there. All gone but one, plus there was a new baby piggy, but that wasn't the worst of it. The piggies were cramped in the little plastic enclosure with 7 bunnies! The baby was so small comapred to the rabbits. It was downright painful to see.

There were two other bins of 7 rabbits each. My tongue is probably bloody from biting, but I knew it would be pointless to say anything to the teenagers who work there. It's bad enough most of the rabbits will probably get dumped after Easter, but my heart bled for that baby piggy.

Okay, rant over. Just had to get that off my chest.

Re: What's Even Worse Than Selling Easter Bunnies?

I'm so sorry. Honestly, I can't go into pet stores. The last time I did was awful. Two pigs were crammed in a tiny wee cage with soaked, dirty bedding, and they didn't have any water in their bottle. There were no employees to be found. I took out their water bottle, filled it with water from a bathroom and put it back in their cage. The bottle started to leak all over, I noticed it had a hole in it. I was livid, so I took a new bottle off the shelf, took it out of the package, filled it with water, and put it in their cage. While I was doing all this, there were still no employees around. I could have robbed everything from the store without being noticed. When I got home, I told my dad and he called the manager and complained.
I literally get sick to my stomach when I go into petstores, I just can't do it anymore. Thankfully I have pet supply stores in my area that I can go to instead.

The last time I went to a petstore was Petco. I wanted to check out hidey houses. I passed by the guinea pig aquarium and saw one with a horrible sore on it's ear.

Apparently just because they have Banfield vet right in their darn store, doesn't mean they treat them right away. Lazy jerks.

I never plan on going to one ever again. I rather buy all my pig toys on Etsy.

Poor baby. Why in the world would anyone mix a tiny pig with a bunch of larger bunnies? Did it look like he had easy access to the food?

Pet stores irritate me. The one I got my first from are always crowding something like twenty or more ferrets into medium-sized fish tanks, and the piggies don't have it much better. They're always active and healthy and separated by species, at least. The mall petstore, on the other hand... they have TINY cavies (cashing in on the cute factor) in enclosures about the size of you average desktop aquarium. I can't avoid pet stores because I've a bunch of different species and they all need something, but I always go to the ones that only sell supplies.

I went to a Petco and saw a guinea pig with a huge infected scab on it's crest.

Wow, are some pet stores really that bad? All the pet stores here take care of their animals.. They're all in clean cages and they're not overstocked.

I wish we had the luxery of supply only pet stores here. I have to force myself to look away from the guinea pigs. They're always in aquariums, and look like the downright lost their will to live. The only good thing about it is that they always have clean bedding and hay, but still. The pigs are almost ALWAYS housed with rabbits, unless they don't carry rabbits. I was driving home today, and I saw a man on the side of the road selling Easter bunnies. There were at least twelve pure white rabbits, crammed into a pet store cage. I wanted to cry. When I complained to my animal lover aunt, she retorted by saying, "well, maybe they like it that way." I wanted to smack her.

Re: What's Even Worse Than Selling Easter Bunnies?

I really think the little piggy is going to have trouble eating, and they're probably just putting rabbit food in there since the bunnies way outnumber the guinea pigs. At least when I bought Mufasa, it was just piggies (although too many in too small of a space), and they had hay as well as pellets. But their pens are low enough so kids can stick in their hands and grab the animals, so the critters are always getting tormented that. I noticed long before we had pigs, since I've been going there for a while for cat scratchers and bird cages.

The sad thing is, there's no way they're going to sell even half those rabbits by Easter. I wonder what they'll do with them? Actually, it's better not knowing. It's bad enough most of the piggies are gone, since I'm sure at least some met the same fate as Mufasa since they shared such close quarters.

When the animals at my local petstores get "too old", they just sell them at a discount.

You can always buy online. Companies often have free shipping over a certain amount ( So you can just bulk shop). If Amazon itself sells the things you're looking for, you get the free shipping over 25 dollars. If you're in the States, that is.

I shop at the PetSmart right down the street where I live all the time. I always noticed that the animals seem to be well kept except for this one time I went a week ago. The Guinea Pigs had NOTHING in there cage except bedding. And not just the pigs but the hamsters, rats, and mice. I don't know what the employees were doing. The pigs were in the corner looking all bored. Who knows how long they been like that.

I do shop on Amazon when I can, but I still have to go to an actual store some times. For example, things like pigloos, you can't choose the color and you just get a random one, and their hay is junk.

Beloved89, it's likely the cage was being cleaned. Once a week everything gets taken out and sanitized. It's supposed to take 15 mins, unless the staffing is bad or the store is busy they do try to get it done quickly. At least they did at the petsmart I worked at, it was a good one.

That's horrible! Wasn't there anyone there you could report them to?
