Factory farms where the milk is produced is the problem. Cows are bred over and over and over again to produce milk until they can no longer breed, and then go to slaughter. The machines used for milking them often injures them. Calves are torn away from their mothers at one day old. Baby male calves are usually going to be used for veal, the females, to repeat the same thing their mother's did.

Re: petco and peta, now working together

that is why I only buy milk from our local farmers. They give tours and stuff all the time and their plant is basically open to the public. The cows are free to graze all they want and just have to come in to be milked every so often. They are even kept after they are no longer good for milk, because we do not slaughter our animals around here. We are a small town, only about 30,000 people and we only have 3 big farms so we know where our milk is coming from. I also buy eggs from a small local farmer who raises about 30 chickens a year. They are all free range and have everything they need. They don't just sit in a pen and lay eggs all day. The farmer just goes out to the field and picks that eggs off of the ground. I kow this isn't perfect, but its much better than me buying a product that may have been gotten by abusing animals.

Re: petco and peta, now working together

Maybe it takes quite a few people to run after all of those free range animals

Maybe it's a township, not a town. Up here many small towns come together to make a township. They are still individual towns, but they share reasorces and I think count thier population together.

I have seen some cows and chickens in small towns while travaling through Ontario (I make a trip from Toronto to Windsor every few months. The train route runs along side many small farms) But since I live in Toronto I can't just skip up the road and find a farm to buy milk from. I have to limit my dairy intake for medical reasons anyway.

Re: petco and peta, now working together

Hardly. They completely caved in my opinion. Now who is going to fight for the small animals remaining? They don't even sell that many large birds and they are harder to maintain properly. It didn't seem that large a concession to me. And keeping the mice/rats separated by sex? They'd have to teach their employees to sex properly and there is still possibility of pregnancy at the pet mills. They took down all their anti petco sites and stopped protesting.

They are basically endorsing them and trusting them to keep their word. Well, Petco agreed not to sell rabbits and ferrets anymore when HRS was on their case and others, but certain stores still sell them.

They were making headway. It would have been something if they had kept on them and stopped animal sales altogether.

They didn't "back down." They compromised. They have opened a positive line of communication with PETCO - this is a GOOD THING! Now, instead of animousity between the two, they are working together. Now PETA will be able to more easily approach PETCO about other animals - one at a time - until they are all out of there. It will take time. And money. Of course PETA is looking for money, they can't get it anywhere else. They can be a bit aggressive and radical, however. Like Greenpeace, they need to think before they act sometimes. About the cow milk thing - why is milkin cows bad? It is actually bad for them NOT to be milked.

Re: petco and peta, now working together

Peta could well be the reason for why so many animals are still in captivity and are still being killed. Think about it; They give up at the first sight of an agreement of which is probably very very crap, they are also the worlds most famous (or should that be infamous) animal rights group but they do nothing to salvage animals rights. What is wrong with these people?

Re: petco and peta, now working together

When I said that I live in small town I meant that we do have a city here that is about 20,000, but most people live in little areas surrounding the town. I myself live in a little community that has about 500 people. Our city is actually just made up of about 15 small little areas. Our town/city actually runs for about 100 kilometers.

As fro Peta and Petco, shouldn't we be happy that at least a little progress has been made. We could not expect that one day Petco would come and say that they will not sell any animals anymore. This is just unrealistic. It must be done in small steps. Instead of jumping down their throats, we should say that we are happy that they made this decision, no matter what their reasons are, then maybe small animals and birds may be next to go. I can't imagine that Peta is going to back off them forever, they will probably just wait until they get new complaints along with new photos and videos and then start all over again and if not this is what they need to do. Since they made a truce all of their evidence that they have now is kinda worthless to use in a campaign against Petco, but new stuff would be fine. This is what they need to be doing. They need to let off Petco for just a little while, to make Petco feel like they have done a good thing (positive reinforcement) and then they need to return to fight for that animals that are left.

Re: petco and peta, now working together

Of course Petco and Petsmart hold adoption events. It good PR. Do you really think they make any money on guinea pigs? No way. But they do make money on all the supplies. So, if they have someone come into do an adoption day, then all those people are going to spend money in the store. That is where they make their money.

This whole deal is a load of crap. They have abandoned all the animals that are left. One of the reasons the large birds was an issue is because they were being smuggled into the country and sold. I personally think PETA was bought off somehow. The whole think stinks.
