Pet Supplies - Online Pet Supply, Pet Products & Accessories at PETCO
Petco's hoping to drum up business and boost their profit margin with this event, and that's all swell, but they won't tell you a few of the things I'm about to.
Their animals come from mills, much the same principle as the puppy mills that have been (rightfully) vilified for years. It's not acceptable to promote this practice for puppies and kittens, and it's also not acceptable for small pets like guinea pigs and hamsters and ferrets and rabbits. Petco won't tell you that the animals they sell are quite often sick, missexed, pregnant, and worse. They aren't likely to tell you they're considered "loss leaders," either. Living, breathing, creatures, that they take a hit on to spin a bigger profit over the lifetime of the animal.
Petco won't tell you that guinea pigs and other animals aren't good or even decent pets for children because they're small and fragile and quite generally aren't a fan of having children manhandle and paw all over them. And they most certainly won't tell you that while they encourage you to buy their merchandise, countless other small animals sit in shelters, many facing euthanasia, many who started out as merchandise in their store, from their mills and their backyard breeders.
Petco counts on the ignorance of consumers, because they know that once people know the truth and learn the harsh realities of buying live animals from them, they won't have nearly so many customers willing to contribute to the cruelty they profit from.
Please, don't buy from stores like this one while so many others wait in shelters and rescues for a much deserved second chance. And please don't support Petco's practice of selling live animals with no more regard or concern than they would a pair of nylon stockings by going to this event.
