Petco - meet the critters event

Oh goodie .. look what Petco is up to now to sell guinea pigs:

Petco is apparently trying to peddle more of their sick milled guinea pigs to people and making a special event out of it at their stores across the country:

Pet Supplies - Online Pet Supply, Pet Products & Accessories at PETCO

They are focusing on guinea pigs (grrr) and mention G-force in this ad:

    MEET A GUINEA PIG

What is more disgusting is they have a 'national adoption' weekend scheduled the week after Local PETCO Store Adoption Events I guess only dogs and cats count though.

James needs to look into proofreading.

Re: Petco - meet the critters event

Yeah, well, since they're posting about it on Craigslist, I decided I would as well.

    Petco's 'Meet the Critters' Events

Feel free to copy and paste this for your own local CL:

Pet Supplies - Online Pet Supply, Pet Products & Accessories at PETCO

Petco's hoping to drum up business and boost their profit margin with this event, and that's all swell, but they won't tell you a few of the things I'm about to.

Their animals come from mills, much the same principle as the puppy mills that have been (rightfully) vilified for years. It's not acceptable to promote this practice for puppies and kittens, and it's also not acceptable for small pets like guinea pigs and hamsters and ferrets and rabbits. Petco won't tell you that the animals they sell are quite often sick, missexed, pregnant, and worse. They aren't likely to tell you they're considered "loss leaders," either. Living, breathing, creatures, that they take a hit on to spin a bigger profit over the lifetime of the animal.

Petco won't tell you that guinea pigs and other animals aren't good or even decent pets for children because they're small and fragile and quite generally aren't a fan of having children manhandle and paw all over them. And they most certainly won't tell you that while they encourage you to buy their merchandise, countless other small animals sit in shelters, many facing euthanasia, many who started out as merchandise in their store, from their mills and their backyard breeders.

Petco counts on the ignorance of consumers, because they know that once people know the truth and learn the harsh realities of buying live animals from them, they won't have nearly so many customers willing to contribute to the cruelty they profit from.

Please, don't buy from stores like this one while so many others wait in shelters and rescues for a much deserved second chance. And please don't support Petco's practice of selling live animals with no more regard or concern than they would a pair of nylon stockings by going to this event.
It's at least as productive as lamenting about the event here. It'll be flagged in pretty short order, I'm sure. I'll just re-post.

That's disgusting. And yes, James could do some proofreading. What are they going to educate them about? About giving them the pellets with all the colorful seeds and junk in it? And buying them a wheel, and a 27"X 16" cage to give their piggies plenty of room? About how you always want to buy from petstores because they're reliable and treat their animals humanely? Sorry I'm ranting. Hope zero people show up, James!

Thanks for the CL post Paula! Very well written - I'll be using it for sure!

This Meet-The-Critters event is a sad sale-booster. The majority of the people wanting to "meet the critters" are going to be little kids, and little kids and squirming pigs don't go well together.

I'm perfectly willing to go to the local petco and hand out guinealynx care sheets as well as a list of local rescues to combat their sales. I'm trying to gather some other volunteers too.

That's great! I saw the post over on GL, I think there are some awesome ideas over there too.

I can make some PDFs for people to print out as handouts or even poster size stuff if anyone's interested in showing up and handing stuff out. Hit me up in PM if anyone's interested.

Should I buy a piggie from them?
I know they are just in it for the profit and mass produce cavies, but there is nowhere else to buy them where I live. there is another pet shop but they got even worse reviews.

I am definitely going to show up at the Meet the Critters. I don't really like or want to support Petco.

Where do you live, Cavy lover? If it is anywhere near a Petco, I assure you there are many poor little guinea pigs in your area sitting in shelters, and/or in the process of being dumped by their owners via Craigslist or other lists. If Petco sells guinea pigs in your region, there are certainly breeders around selling to Petco. Guinea pigs breed fast and it is inevitable that breeders will produce way more pigs than can be sold or provided homes locally--even with appalling mortality rates.

Please look on petfinder.com, on Craigslist, and call your local Humane Society, SPCA, and animal shelters. With a little energy and patience (which you will need anyway once you have piggies) you will find a darling pair of piggies without supporting an animal-harming organization like Petco.

No, you should NOT. You should find a rescue, a shelter or a rehoming ad so you can adopt.

Why would you want to go to this 'event'? They will push a sick pig on you along with a bunch of harmful supplies like a too small cage, salt lick, bad pellets, etc.

If they get sales out of this, it will just encourage them. That is not why I posted this.

Re: Petco - meet the critters event

I would never ever buy another pig from a pet store I did years ago and it was a big mistake. With that being said just because there is a Petco or PetSmart near doesn't always mean that there are piggies at the shelters and rescues. We have 4 PetSmart's and 2 Petco's here but it took me months and months to finally come across Penny. Now I'm impatiently waiting for her a friend.

Still don't go to that event unless you plan to picket it. The things you read about those stores are true. My first pig 6 years ago was not only missexed, but it was very sick.

Re: Petco - meet the critters event

I live in a small town in Missouri. the zip is 63701. There are 2 animal shelters here. One is anon kill and I have volunteered their for about 3 years. I that time they had mostly cats (way above 100) and the average of 5 dogs their. There was only one rare time when they had bunnies.

Here was my findings at Petco last weekend:
When I stepped into Petco, their was supplies and animals who were treated like supplies. When I wanted to see or pet a guinea pig. A man rudely said "hurry up okay!! We have a lot of stuff to do." Yeah, like probably unpack some more animals.
He did not let me hold it or interact with it. He just let me pet its head. He keep on repeating "Hurry up!! We are really busy!!" Then after 30 seconds of petting. He put it back inside a left. The employees are untrained, rude, and they have an attitude all written over them like

hurry up! When I get my shift done I don't have to work and deal with these pets!! And of course, I will get my money!

The cavies were stuck inside an aquarium with hay in a bowl but there was almost none!! There was also no veggies there!

    A true story!

I might stop by Petco today, so I will keep everyone updated.
I would love to pass out care sheets or something like that. at Petco they don't really support good things for Guinea Pigs. They recommend healthy veggies as a treat!!

Would you be willing to drive up to St. Louis?

I have family at SEMO and down in Sikeston, I was just down there last weekend and wasn't planning on going down again so soon, but I might be able to help transport if really needed.
