Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

Hello, we havent gotten our pigs yet, and its our first time having them, so we plan on getting them from a local petland. We dont know where to look for breeders, so would a pet store be alright? I just dont know what to look for in a good guinea pig. Any help? Thanks!

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

Please don't buy from petstores or breeders. The best thing would be to find a shelter or rescue and adopt a couple of homeless cavies.

Here are a couple of threads to read. The first will explain why not to buy from a petstore and the second contains links to other threads about people having bad experiences with petstore purchased pigs.

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

I purchased my piggies from a pet store ( There are no rescues or breeders near me). Make sure that there eye and nose havent any discharge and there breathing is quiet. People will tell you NOT to buy from a petstore. But you do what you thnk best. If you have found some piggies that you have fell in love with then get them. People don't think but pet stores get their piggies from breeders also.

Thank you very much, this is wonderful advice! I hadnt thought about the fact that guinea pigs at pet stores could be from breeders as well! I'd looked into shelters, but fortunately they all get adopted so quickly, and the ones near me rarely have any guinea pigs in need of a home! I knew most people would by from breeders if they could, but I have no idea where to find one, and I have bought animals from pet stores before and had no problems. As long as the pet store itself is a nice one!

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

It is never all right to buy from a pet store or breeder when there are thousands of homeless guinea pigs at risk of euthanasia, regardless of what the above poster may think.

If you are doing what you think is right, then why is it right to support pet mills, animal abuse and neglect and backyard breeding? And the pet overpopulation problem?

Pet shops buying from breeders is not a good thing. No reputable breeders sell their animals to pet shops.

If there are pet stores selling animals near you, there are guinea pigs that need rescue.

Guinea pigs are prey animals. They hide their symptoms until it is too late. Read over the pet store sticky links. Many guinea pigs fall ill days or weeks after purchase. Often they are missexed and / or pregnant.

I'm sorry but please do not advocate buying pigs in petstores on this site. All you are going to do is cause for a heated thread and get shot down because we are trying to stop the cycle of abuse, not contribute to it more.

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

What justice are you doing to the world buy buying from a pet store/breeder? All you do in increase the overpopulation problem. Every time you buy a Guinea Pig, or any other overpopulated animal, two die in animal shelters. I highly doubt you would want that to happen. If you have trouble locating a shelter or rescue just let us know your general location and how far your willing to drive and I guarantee you we will find you pigs to adopt.

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

I'd look at the poster's profile before taking their terrible advice.

This poster is brand new and has posted some other questionable stuff. Obviously they don't get what this site stands for but if you are only looking for someone to tell you it is okay to buy from pet stores (i.e one post out of several hundreds saying it is not okay) then you may have the wrong forum.

Any pet store that sells animals is not a nice one. It doesn't matter how clean the store may look. It's what you do not see that is the problem i.e. Pet Stores and Guinea Pigs

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

I'm confused - when did buying from breeders become a good thing?

Actually most people would adopt from a rescue or shelter if given the chance. Not buy from bad breeders.

No reputable breeders sell to pet shops. They are usually breeders like this Hollister Seizure and Rescue

It most certainly isn't all right to buy your pigs from a pet store. Pet store animals are often sick and mistreated, come from breeding mills and buying an animal from them contributed to their profit margin and an otherwise heinous cycle of back-to-back breeding and other maltreatment. There are no doubt rescues or private owners in your area looking to rehome. It might take more time than just walking into a pet store and making a purchase, but rescuing an animal is worth the wait. When you buy a pig from a pet store, one or two more will take its place, and the cycle will go on and on and on until someone stops it.

Some places to look for homeless pigs (other than pet stores or breeders) are (Google any of these) Petfinder, Guinea Lynx, Pigloo, Craigslist, Kijiji, Hoobly, GPAN, or your local humane societies or shelters. Even if they don't list them on their webpage, humane societies often do have pigs to adopt - just call. They can always take your name and number and give you a call if pigs do become available.

Yes, this excuse is often used, but the reality is that if there are pet stores in your area, there most certainly are rescues or private folks looking to rehome. You likely didn't look hard enough or didn't look long enough. But if you had really wanted to rescue a pig instead of buying one, you'd have found a way.

Yeah, I guess it shouldn't matter that buying that pig you "fell in love with" opens up a spot for more animals to be abused and mistreated in his/her place, eh? This selfishness is really staggering.

Where on Earth would they have come from if not from a breeder, or - more likely - a breeding mill - one where conditions are dirty, and cramped, and animals are horribly mistreated?

It's awful advice, actually. Unless, of course, you're looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear - that it's okay to do what you want and contribute to an already existing overpopulation problem, not to mention perpetuate a cruel cycle of abuse if you really, really want it.

Most people here don't buy from breeders if they could, because breeding is irresponsible and it's far, far better to rescue an animal than just buy one. And reasoning that if a pet store seems to be a "nice one" it's okay to buy a living creature from them is faulty. I imagine most pet stores would appear to be "nice ones" with great conditions. But what you can't see are the animals in the back that are in horrid conditions, many sick or dying, and you certainly wouldn't be encouraged to see the atrocious conditions from which they likely came - because that would be bad for business, and in the end, pet stores really are just about a bottom line. If you really have no problem contributing to that, perhaps you should do a little more investigating into what you'd be contributing to, to the reality of the conditions they keep their animals in and from where they come, and hopefully, you'll change your mind and find the patience to wait for an animal that needs rescuing.

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

Today I went to 2 animal shelters in search for piggers. I found one at each- I white one and a black and orange one, and my favourite kind, American. They were both sweet, healthy, and less than half the price than petstores. I will be adopting one (they are opposite genders) and will be waiting for another! I strongly recommend getting them from a shelter, they were originally purchased from a petstore except they deserve to be picked first because of all they've been through. And plus, the ones at the petstore will stay there until someone buys them, but the ones at the shelter might not be so lucky. But seriously, those pigs were too cute, and in no way less 'good' than petstore or breeder pigs!

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

That is so maddening! :-( Why is rebelpiggy still on this forum, why hasnt he/she been banned? Sorry, that is upsetting. It seems as though that one post just totally convinced the newbie to go to the petstore! The person just needed one little nudge and now thats where she is getting them from.

Like Vicky2 said, we can help you find guinea pigs if you cant find any yourself. Just do your research first before you go to the pet store. If you search through this forum you will find many posts about people buying from pet stores and then find the pigs are sick. Its almost a guarantee they will be sick, and you can NEVER tell by just looking at them

Because members aren't banned because they disagree with the ideals of this forum. RebelPiggy, while infuriating, hasn't done anything that's against the rules, and won't be banned for merely having an opinion, no matter how ridiculous we may find it. Our goal, and our hope, is to inform and educate people on the horrors of pet stores and share with them the benefits of adopting, not obliterate those who have a different opinion or mindset.

It's not a foregone conclusion that this newbie will go to a pet store; perhaps s/he will consider some of the information on this site and decide to adopt, no thanks to RebelPiggy, of course, but it's possible just the same.

Because they have done nothing that has violated the rules or policies of this forum. We don't ban people just because they are breeders or have a differing opinion.

Re: Is getting a pig from a petstore alright?

Ok...yes, stupid question on my behalf. I guess I've seen a lot of people condone pet stores on this site but never seen anyone encourage a newbie to go buy from a pet store. That was the enfuriating bit... They should just keep their opinion to themselves.

I disagree. No one should have to keep their opinion to themselves. RP is a member here just as you and many others are, and free to share his/her opinion. We don't have to like or agree with it, and anyone is more than free to say so.

I agree it's discouraging to see a member encourage another to go buy from a pet store when so many have tried so hard to educate and inform on all the reasons not to, but that doesn't mean someone shouldn't be allowed to share an opinion, troubling as it may be.
