Question Question:do those that show also breed?

There are about 4 beautiful Peruvian cavies on my local craigslist and they used in the descriptions of them things like: "show quality" or "has been shown". They are only asking about 20.00 per pig with food and care guide but I wanted to see if you all felt it was a breeder add.

I think most of them are breeders. They breed in order to find their "perfect" pig.

Even if they aren't the actual breeders, most likely they're going to buy another pig from a breeder that they can show. I wouldn't want to support that.

Re: Question:do those that show also breed?

They could just be saying that they're "show quality" in an effort to get more people interested in them. The fact that they have four, though, would seem to me that they are probably also breeding pigs and those that are being sold now are overstock.

To answer the question of whether or not those that show are also breeders, more likely than not the answer is going to be yes. And even if they aren't, the whole concept of showing is that of judging an animal, thereby creating a standard to strive for, and therefore more breeding.

In any case, rather than speculating whether or not they *might* be a breeder, you could always just ask them. Most are more or less shameless in saying so.

Re: Question:do those that show also breed?

My money would be on them being a breeder as well. It honestly doesn't matter though. Showing 110% supports breeding. The two go hand in hand. Even if the person showing does not breed themselves then they are supporting and encouraging someone else to breed. After all, they need to get their show pigs somewhere right?

Re: Question:do those that show also breed?

As others have said, someone who shows doesn't necessarily breed, but they probably do. At the very least they support the practice in earnest.

I agree with Paula that you should call this person for more information. Is this a craigslist posting? If so, they may have purchased these "show quality pigs" from a breeder but they haven't bred or even shown them themselves but may have just wanted the "perfect" guinea pig to fulfill whatever personal need they have and are now unable/no longer want to care for the pigs.

Re: Question:do those that show also breed?

My main concern was adopting but not wanting to support people that show animals or breeders. I will contact this person to get more info....I have to admit though 2 of the girls are absolutely georgous!!

It's most likely a breeder.
