Animal Welfare so upset my head is spinning! - Guinea Pig Cages, Care, Store, Photos of Guinea Pigs and More Forum!

SO...on my local Craigslist today there is an add for2 guinea pigs...male and female 5 and 6 months housed together in what was called a HUGE house. (we know better) All the supplies and food were selling for 100.00 OR the poster would accept a trade for a ps3, an Xbox, wii or a new washing machine! Are you kidding me! They state they have had them a month and the pigs are boring and they have no time for them!
I wish I had the room but certainly wouldn't pay 100.00 to these people.

Of course they're boring! They surely live in a tiny litter box and if the owners have that little regard for them, aren't getting any attention at all. Nice. Real nice

That is such a shame. I hope if no one rescues them, these people will at least have the heart to take them to a shelter so the piggies can have a chance of finding a good home.

I hate it when people think that guinea pigs are energetic and fun. Oh wait, they are if they're not living in a shoe box!

Why would they treat them any differently? They can walk into the nearest pet store and buy more - what reason would they have to give them any more consideration than a new washing machine? One of the most damaging of unintended consequences of the pet stores that sell small pets as merchandise is this - people haven't the slightest regard for their well being and don't give a second thought to trading them off like they would any other throwaway product.

Boring? Well, they surely seem that way to a person or persons who purchased them and has been led to believe, again by the pet stores, that they make awesome companion animals that have few needs beyond crappy pellet food and water. It's ridiculous but far from surprising. Thank you Petsmart and Petco.

A washing machine is worth several hundred dollars. Gee, sounds like a fair trade for two pigs that are likely unsocialized, don't come with the proper housing, and probably have a litter of pups to have to deal with.
